Will my gaming progress/data save if I take my profile or account off the xbox?

Your game progress is stored in the cloud storage of your profile. When you load up your games on the new console you will be prompted to load your original game saves from the previous console.

Thanks for the response and suggestions! Fortunately my xbox live profile wasn't on the thumbdrive/effected so I am able to redownload any content i purchased but my son had profiles and saved progress on games that weren't connected to xbox live account.
I was hoping that there was a way to save or get that data off the drive so I can reformat without losing anything.

With this transfer method, if I transfer a game, for example, and start it on my original profile from my Xbox, will all of my data and progress be saved?

will moving all saved data onto the cloud can keep everything saved and can still be seen on my xbox live profile on my xbox one? In other words all my saved progress from the 360 will not be deleted from my xbox live profile after moving the data to the
cloud and can be able to continue playing the 360 games on my xbox one with the backwards compatibility?

Unfortunately, it's not possible to directly link an existing offline Xbox 360 profile to a new or existing Xbox Live account used with a different profile. There are limitations around merging accounts or transferring save data between them.

However, there are still a couple of options you can explore:

Create a New Live Profile for the Offline Profile:

Sign out of your current Live account on the Xbox 360.

Sign in to the offline profile you want to connect to Live.

Go to Settings > Profile > Join Xbox Live.
Create a new Microsoft account (email and password) or use a different existing account not associated with any other Xbox Live profiles.

This will create a new online profile for your old offline profile, but your achievements, save data, and progress won't be transferred.

Transfer Save Data (Limited Compatibility):

This won't link the profiles, but it can salvage some progress.

Check if the game you played offline supports Xbox Live storage.

Certain games allow uploading save data from an offline profile to the cloud if you connect to Live with a new profile.

Once uploaded, you can access the save data from your new online profile.

However, this depends on individual game functionality and might not be available for all games.
