Will "dead" gamertags ever become available to users?

I tried to change my gamertag recently, but it said that the new one was taken. I looked up the profile of the person with that gamertag, and it is clear that have not been online since before the launch of the Xbox 360. They have no avatar, and no played
games. I was wondering if there is like some sort of appeals process to have an extinct gamertag made available again; I just think it's a shame to have all those gamertags being wasted when people are willing to pay for them.

Yes if you change the gamertag, it becomes available for someone else to use it, unless it was a Forced Name Change, in which case it will not become available.

 

"Dead" Gamertags

Yea I know what you mean. I just got mine taken from me not that long ago. I would like a "dead" tag that I would like to use but now I have to find something different until they decide to revive them.

 

Not all gamertags are used on xbox live,they are used on other services as well so you can't know for certain if a tags in use or not.

The last time Microsoft released some gamertags people were getting them to sell,which is against the ToC so they have not done it since.

No one knows if they will do it again in the future,i doubt it though.

 

No avatar could just be they have a zune or xbox music account.

Both require a gamertag even if you dont own an xbox.
