Will a router improve a gateway connection?

Howdy,

My xbox live connection has been stuttering and lagging for some time and my ISP has yet to be of any help.

I live in a condo and I connect directly through a gateway in my wall.

This occurs to me as the best way, because I figure if a router does anything, it's filtering out something I need.

But my question is, is there any situation in which running my internet through a router and setting it up a certain way will help my connection?

It doesn't make sense to me, but I figured I would ask since half these troubleshooting articles have to do with fixing a router.

This is the support article for double NAT. Basically seems like it's an issue with having your gateway and your router doing the same tasks.

The more simple your network the less things there are to go wrong. If you have a router and a gateway and can get yourself to just the gateway you'll be better off.

Most likely its the brand of router you are using , some wont stay connected as well as others , if its a modem and router combo (gateway) that came from your isp , that's probably the issue.....you could try and reset the router to factory defaults and
see if it improves....

 

A router with forwarded ports and open NAT settings would certainly improve your gaming experience!

 

Sorry, I realize this response is going to sound a lot like "yeah, but really?"

But if I'm going through the gateway, isn't everything already as open as it can be?

Isn't the forwarding of ports just a way for the router to overcome the issues of being a router?

I've tried some port forwarding, but if I've been misunderstanding this the whole time, I may try again in earnest.
