  1. Wifi Range Extender and Xbox One Not Working - Connection Problems/Issues

Can anyone help me out here? I have an Xbox One X and for some reason when I connect to the Wifi Extender's network, it connects, but it shows slow speeds and then eventually disconnects.

I have a Netgear Nighthawk EX7300 Wifi Mesh Extender (https://www.netgear.com/home/products/networking/wifi-range-extenders/EX7300.aspx) and everything works fine. I am connected to the 2G band with my laptop right now, and my iPad is connected to the 5G
band. I just ran a Speedtest on the iPad and it shows 278Mbps download and 277 upload.

Yet when I connect to Xbox Live on that same 5G band, it shows something like 15Mbps downloading a game, and then flat out disconnects or
won't connect when playing a game, like Grand Theft Auto, for example.

I'm okay with technology and can follow directions if someone knows how to fix this. I am
not tech-savvy enough to know ports and NAT and MAC addresses, etc...so the more detailed the help the better.

    Thanks!

    :)

To me that range seems to be 80 MHz wide. I wouldn't recommend using 80 MHz for numerous of reason. If it's truly operating in 80 MHz, then change this to 40 MHz channel width. EDIT: My fault. If 80 MHz it should be operating on channel 106. I assume (p) stands
for primary. Nevertheless, if you change to FastLane you should be good to go to use 40 MHz width on the extender, as your router and extender are no longer bridged over 5 GHz.

    I'm coping from the manual:

    Select Do More > FastLane.

    The FastLane Technology page displays.

Select the FastLane Technology radio button.

The page adjusts and displays two more radio buttons.

    Select a radio button:

Router-to-Extender in 2.4 GHz only and Extender-to-Device in 5 GHz only (Try this mode to start with)

Router to Extender in 5 GHz only and Extender-to-Device in 2.4 GHz only

Click the SAVE button. Your settings are saved.
I can try this, but will that affect devices that are using the extender? For example, we have an older Apple TV up here and my laptop, which don't seem to find the 5G band, so I can only connect using the 2.4 band. I'm afraid if I change that, I won't
be able to access the extender at all with some older devices...

No offense, but all of that may as well have been in another language. I'll address as best I can:

    - Can't connect with an ethernet cord anywhere - no hard wires allowed.

    - I did a Speedtest with the iPad where I connected it to a Seattle server, and got 331 download and 160 upload.

    - The extender is located in perfect position, according to those specs.

    - I don't believe we're using WPS to connect the extender with the router. You do need a password to connect to either of the two extender bands (Statlana_EXT2G or Statlana_EXT5G), but it's the same password we have for the regular Statlana wifi.

    - I don't know what any of that means - what is "wireless backhaul communication"?

    - I don't know what "Fast Lane" is, "backhaul communication" is, or "client access" is.
No offence taken. I'll try my best to clear things up a bit.

Basically you will not be able to run an Ethernet cable between your Xbox and to the Ethernet port on your extender then?

The backhaul is simply put, the wireless path between your extender and your wireless router. A router that normally connects to a wired infrastructure. (Internet cable).

    Client is your PC/Xbox/iPad/etc.

Fast Lane is a feature on your extender that allow it to communicate with your wireless router on 2,4 GHz, and serve clients on 5 GHz, or vice versa. I would recommend you to use this mode and here's why:

Wi-Fi is a complex medium in comparison to Ethernet. Ethernet (simply put, a network cable that you plug in to a router or switch) operates so that when a device send-, or receive data, it can do so simultaneously. This is often referred to as "Full Duplex".
With Wi-Fi, only one device at a time can either send-, or receive data. That includes the wireless router as well (no exceptions made). This is referred to as "Half Duplex". This would mean that every device on your wireless network that are on the same channel
has to contend for the wireless medium for transmissions. Those devices take their turn to send/receive data. The faster the client can send, or receive, its data, the quicker it can free up the wireless medium so the next device can have their turn. This
is the most crucial step in a Wi-Fi network, to free up the air/energy.

Now, with an extender things get more complicated, since the wireless router and the extender are on the same channel. This causes extra contention overhead, which affects performance. If you add to that equation that clients are also permitted transmissions
on the very same channel as the wireless backhaul, it would add up the negatively impact to throughput. With Fast Lane you can make it so that 2,4 GHz provide access for clients and the 5 GHz serve as the link between the extender and your wireless router,
    or vice versa.

I tested the NAT type and it says Open. Tried it 3 times in a row and it kept saying "Open"

Tested the "network speed & statistics" and it says 145.90Mbps download and 99.40 upload right now. Also says packet loss 0% and MTU 1480, latency 49ms and Wireless strength 92%. (When I ran the Speedtest on my iPad on the same network right now it says
    208 down and 233 up).

Tested the Multiplayer connection and it says "it's all good, there are no problems" etc.

Tested NAT again for the heck of it and it still says Open.
Have you tried to connect your console with an Ethernet cable to your extender?

I wouldn't compare an iPad with an Xbox (console) in regard to wireless communication. The iPad is solely build around wireless communication, and highly depends on this medium to be able to communicate. The Xbox on the other hand is not built in regard to
these parameters. The main difference is the built in Wi-Fi chipset and the antennas (even if both these devices are 2x2:2).

More importantly: You can't compare a speedtest of of your PC or iPad, without actually alter the test server you're running the test towards. Speedtest.net, for example, test your throughput and ping against a test server based on best ping (by default). When
you run the diagnostic test on your console, to test throughput etc., it'll do so against a server located in Seattle (if nothing has change so don't quote my on this one). You can alter the location of a test server in speedtest to a server located in Seattle
    for better comparison.

A couple of things to consider when you use an extender/repeater, and that is:

    • At least 50% cell overlap between the coverage cells so that the repeater and your wireless router can communicate. Which is also stated in the documentation: "Unplug the extender and move it to a new location that is about halfway between your router
and the area with a poor router WiFi signal."

    • Don't use WPS to connect your extender with your wireless router.
    • Evaluate the best possible band/radio/channel for wireless backhaul communication, between your extender and wireless router. A spectrum analyzer can help you with this (WinFi Lite).
    • Activate "FastLane" on your extender. For example, 2,4 GHz radio for Backhaul communication and the 5 GHz radio for client access, or vice versa.

No, do not have the ability to connect anything with an ethernet cable at this point.

I keep reading that it's a problem with ports or NAT or something, but I don't know what any of that means. I updated the firmware for the extender and it's all updated as of right now, I just don't know if I need to open specific ports for the Xbox or something...?
Where do you read "that it's a problem with ports or NAT"?

If you run the diagnostic tool test on your console's network settings, what is the outcome of your NAT? Run the diagnostic test a few times to make sure the outcome of your NATs behaviour is consistent, and not drifting from "Open" to "Strict" for example.

What is the make and model of your wireless router?

Network Extenders don't actually work the way most people believe they do. In the best case scenario they are cutting your bandwidth in half, which would be a HUGE impact on the stability of your Xbox connection. As a network engineer I would never recommend
a network extender as a means to connect anything but the simplest IoT devices or other light usage devices.
