Wide Area Cross-Platform Multiplayer between Xbox One and Xbox One X?

Alright, so I've heard people talk about how you can play between Windows 10 and the Xbox One X. I've heard about how you can play Xbox One games with the Xbox One X with backwards compatibility. I've heard about how you can "system link" play locally between
all three generations of the Xbox. I've heard so many things surrounding this one question without actually answering the question and I'm really surprised that nobody has asked this yet...

"Can someone who is playing on an Xbox One X, play an Xbox One game in wide area multiplayer with someone who has an Xbox One?"

For example, let's say I wanted to play my old XB1 copy of Ghost Recon Wildlands with my buddies. If I put that disc into an Xbox One X console, and click "Multiplayer" and my buddy has an Xbox One (without the X) and he lives six states away, would we be able
to connect up and play Wildlands using that setup?

They already have.

 

All version of the One run the same software. So you'll be playing with people who may have an original One, and S, or an X.

 

Well just because they run the same OS doesn't mean that they'll allow cross-platform play on wide area networks. I would not say it's a stretch that Microsoft would disable a feature like this in order to spur sales for the Xbox One X via peer pressure as
a proxy.

I.e. The "just tell your buddies to buy an XB1X" argument.

The only reason I bring this is up is because the XB1X doesn't seem like part of the "XB1" family, as there are going to be games that are XB1X exclusive. You don't see that with the Xbox One S for example. It's advertising itself as a same generation Xbox,
but in practice it is behaving like a new generation of Xbox consoles.

So, without drawing assumptions, is there any level of confidence that they are ABSOLUTELY going to be able to work together in the way I described?

 

There are no games that are exclusive to the One X, nor will they be. All One games will run on any version of the One. They will just look better on the One X. They will definitely work the way you described since they are all running on the same system.

 

Alright, I will go ahead with my purchase and follow up if any issues arise. Thank you very much for responding.
