    Just got my Xbox one and it won't automatically play a dvd, why is it that I need to be connected to the internet?

    you need the Blu-ray app for the Xbox to play DVD/Blu-ray movies, been this way since the beginning, once you have the app you don't need to be connected.

    Hi,

    You've said you've tried blu-ray discs and Xbox One discs but have you tried DVD discs?

    Xbox 360 games are on DVD and my guess is that DVD won't play either.

    The reason why they won't play is that DVD diode for reading these discs has failed. Other discs work because that laser diode is still working.

    Try a DVD disc. If it does not work you'll need a repair.

    Please make sure that the DVD that you purchased is from the same region where you purchase the console.

    If it's the same region and you are only getting a black screen, please do a power cycle by doing the steps below.

    1. Turn off the Xbox console by pressing the Xbox button on the front of the console for about 10 seconds until it shuts down completely.

    2. Unplug the console's power cable. Wait 10 seconds.

    Important Be sure to wait 10 seconds. This step resets the power supply.

    3. Plug the console power cable back in.

    4, Press the Xbox button on your console to turn on the Xbox console.

    HD DVD Support

    Hi Ouligars!

    Unfortunately, the Xbox will not play HD DVD's without the Xbox HD DVD player. I have one and they are certainly hard to find these days. If you have the Xbox HD DVD player, then a HD DVD app will appear in the Video tab. As far as I know, non-Xbox HD DVD
    players are unsupported on the 360.

    Of course, if you meant you found the Xbox HD DVD player, then as stated above, you will find the app for it in the My Video tab... Hope this helps!
