Why is there no year game pass ultimate subscription?

You indeed bought a year of Xbox Live Gold subscription, the reason why it was converted to Xbox game pass ultimate is because you have an active Xbox Game Pass Ultimate when you redeem the code.

Sorry but there is no annual Xbox game pass ultimate yet.

If You Get Game Pass Ultimate It Will Convert Your Xbox Live Gold 1 Year Into Game Pass Ultimate For The Remaining Time Left On Your Year Subscription. So For Example If You Have Xbox Live Gold Paid For A Year And You Upgrade To Game Pass Ultimate It Will Convert It To One Year Game Pass Ultimate Or However Many Months You Have Left Of Your Subscription.

(Make Sure It Says Upgrade To Game Pass Ultimate So It Will Convert Your Gold To Game Pass)

We had an active Gold subscription and my son tried the Game pass for a month and then cancelled it but now we don't have anything and we are only 5 months into our year of Gold. Why do we not have anything now?

By activating the Game Pass Ultimate subscription (the trial version) it converts your Gold subscription to Game Pass Ultimate completely (replaces) so when you cancel the Game Pass Ultimate service renewal, you are canceling the service completely. This
is something that the service detects and advises when activating the Game Pass Ultimate subscription trial.

Did you have any type of subscription on your account when your friend gifted you a subscription? If so, was it Ultimate?

If you have an Ultimate subscription on your account and add a prepaid gold or game pass code, it is converted to Ultimate. That's what it sounds like happened. As stated above, if you had Ultimate and your friend gifted you a 1 year gold pass, it would
have added 4 months of Ultimate onto the amount of time you had left, which is why it would end in August instead of April. 1 year of gold is $60 which is why it sounds like that is the case. A year of Ultimate is way more expensive than that.
