Why is my xbox saying that I don't have enough storage for a game that was just working and...

I was unable to install the game, although I have enough storage with the external storage box plugged in. If I don't have it plugged in, I do not have enough storage to install the game on my internal storage. What do I do now, that this method has unfortunately not worked?

One last question, how can I update the Xbox without the hard drive? I tried it but it didn't work because it is saying again that I don't have enough storage even I removed the hard drive...

I can't log into Xbox live without doing the update. It's saying I have no storage available which is simply not true. There should be more than enough storage (it's fairly new, 250gb and we haven't used hardly any of it yet). It wont let me do the update.
It's saying my storage is unformatted and I can't access any data at all. I'm frozen out of everything because I can't get into Xbox live.

Why would I suddenly need to format this? Why should I have to lose all that has been saved so far? This is a mistake on Xbox's end. I don't want to format and erase my info bc that doesn't even guarantee this glitch will be fixed.
