Why is MS trying to kill local multiplayer?

It's like the industry has turned its back on the mode of play that made consoles household items. Too few games with split-screen or good options for more than one person. Hopefully, some of the upcoming shooters will remedy this, but i was at least hoping
for some backward-compatible options and... nope. the list is a joke, with only a small handful of decent games. Do they just think it's not important any more? (Has it
    become unimportant?)

I haven't been able to retire my 360 because there are just too few options on the One to entertain friends and family.

    :)

Confirmed: No Media Centre Extender... No Backwards Compatibility... No Deal.

Interesting... I wonder why MS seems to be trying to kill off WMC suddenly.

"The mode of play that made consoles household items" is only your opinion.

I, for one, can't stand split screen. Even with a large screen TV, having to view half of the screen, while there may be something completely different happening on the other half... well, it's hard to do when you get used to seeing the whole screen. it's
distracting. I actually had a friend who got sick while we were playing split screen, because he was trying to watch my half and his at the same time.

I'm an auditory learner, having the game playing the audio for 2 players is hugely disorienting along with distracting and I just can't tune it out.

It's also a bit controversial for online MP. "Split screeners" can often be seen as having an 'advantage'. Gears of War is a good example. If one person is in the death lobby, he can 'watch over' the other person and keep an eye on enemies for him.

The opposite can also be true, using Gears as an example again... split screeners can also be seen as "the guest probably isn't all that good... being that he's just a guest and probably doesn't play much". I know some people who will leave a lobby if there
are split screeners playing. Pick your reason from the 2 provided.

It isn't that it has become unimportant... for those who use it and enjoy it, I'm sure it is important... but it has become less prominent. With the advancements in technology, it's now easier and less costly than ever to set up a home network. Most homes
now have multiple TVs as well, so the only thing missing is the additional console.

Add to this, the fact that so many people have very busy lives, crazy schedules that they often have to keep odd hours to accommodate... it's just much more convenient and easier to sit down solo and jump on XBL for a few quick games, rather than to have
multiple people all trying to flex their schedules or whatever to get together at someone's house for a gaming session.

There are still some games that support local MP... but they're becoming the minority.

  5. Think about it. No split screen means that familes who used to play together on the same console now has to buy 2 consoles, but I hear that with Halo 5 you won't need to go Gold in order do co-op missions with friends/family, neither at home, nor half a
    wrold away. (Clarification needed)

Why is MS trying to kill local multiplayer?

Well, Xbox One will get some of Xbox 360 playable on this month (really cool thing from Microsoft, read more

    here
) and also co-op works fine with those games. I have just got Xbox One so I'm not yet familiar with all possible co-op games, but luckily previous poster already helped with that problem!

And also if this thread was made because Halo 5, you can't blame Microsoft's Xbox team, but 343 Industries, and they have different forum.

  10. Split screen is a dying thing. Most people play online multiplayer these days and don't bother with split screen. Now I like split screen, as it's always a fun time playing with friends and family. But, the way gaming is going, they're going to focus on
    online rather than local.

But, expect to see some games with split screen added on. It all relies on the developers working it in.
