Why is MS buying Mojang?

It seems ridiculous to spend 2 billion on a Studio that has produced one game.Sure, that game happens to be one of the best selling games of all time in Minecraft but the man responsible for this gem has already cashed his check and moved out.With Notch
gone how is this company worth 2 billion? They wont sell 2 billion in new copies since everyone who wants this game likely already has it.Are they trying to take it away from Sony and stopping the PS4 version? I think it would be a mistake as it will hurt
their profits and anger more fans.The last thing they need is more bad rep.

Why force a piece of hardware onto people that do not want it?

I'm being forced to buy an Xbox one with a blueray player. I plan on buying digital and have a blueray player. I do not need or want another one. Why is MS forcing me to buy one? Damn you MS!

Well if your experience with the companies products has been nothing but bad, including the quality, why would even consider buying something made by them again even if MS is handling the support? which is unlikely.

 

Microsoft are taking the same approach to this as George Lucas did to Star Wars. Make the real money off the merchandising of your product, not the product itself.

No. Phil Spencer has already said that he wants Minecraft to remain a multiplatform game (including phone and handheld versions).

Who exactly would this anger? The game will still be available to everyone, on every platform, in exactly the same form.

And hurting their profits? Did you know that Microsoft's share price went up 1% on this announcement? Given that according to Forbes, Microsoft is worth $343 billion, a 1% increase is nearly $3.5
billion. They've already made their money back.

 

I'm not sure what they bought it for as it doesn't seem like there will be millions of new users. Most people interested probably already have it. I don't see Minecraft toys and other paraphernalia around like I did a few years ago. The hype for the game
isn't there like it used to be. It seems like a ship that's already sailed it's course.

 

Gotta buy something with all that money.

 

They must be figuring they can sell a lot of dlc-skins and texture packs.Or maybe theyre just trying to send a message to gamers that theyre actually focusing on games rather than tv, tv, tv,nfl,tv Call of Duty,tv ,tv, tv.Its probably more of a PR statement
than a financial investment.

Zen hit on it perfectly. Minecraft is bigger than just the game itself. They'll be making money off all the merchandise and TV/Movie that's planned.

 

Besides the obvious merchandising there's also new content to consider. The core game is very limited compared to all the modding done by the community. MS has a ton of ideas to rip off and charge top dollar for. I just hope they keep the PC side separate
so we don't get charged for stuff that's always been free, like updates/skins/themes/everything.

 

for the price of 2.5 billion, i don't think microsoft will be so stupid to start charging gamers for updates and whatnot...hopefully we'll just see more optional stuff like skins and texture packs and whatnot on the console versions, while leaving the actual
game alone and letting the pc gamers do their own thing...though i wonder if ms might start bringing some of the bigger game changing mods to consoles for a price. i'd definitely pay for something like galacticraft.

i do think we may start seeing updates happen more frequently, given that mojang has the funding and resources of ms. they'll probably bring more people on to make more content at a faster rate...certainly to try and bring the xbox versions up to par with
pc faster.

 

PC version's content though mostly comes from the modding community. So why would they pay for DLC when something of similar quality is available for free.

So there is one platform where they aren't going to sell much at all.

 

You guys really need to look deeper into this.

Merchandising, potential movies/kid shows (think Lego movies) and now they can include this game on all their electronics for free (or at least a trial version). This could be huge for their cell phone/mobile marketing.

Unless they really botch the way they handle it, this was a brilliant purchase.

 

^Exactly what I was thinking, it's not about making money off the game sales anymore, it's about incorporating it into the core business which should hopefully bring in more customers across the board.

Jimmy would much rather nag his dad for the windows phone/surface with free Minecraft then the IPhone/pad with crummy free apps and paid good ones, hahaha.
