  1. Why HDR monitors - it's all about the source?

Was searching internet a bit over HDR concept and found this article:

Here's how you shoot high dynamic range images using (almost) any camera

So it seems to be all about the source material - so why would there need to be HDR monitors?

My view was - a pixel is a pixel and RGB on each pixel - allow that to be any color and strength of that color.

So why are they claiming HDR able monitors are needed?

I can understand games rendering engines and stuff could process more intelligently as our eyes+brain do - so yes game rendering affected.

Camera sensors need to be adjusted to see as our eyes - so yes, cameras are affected.

But that's it - why this about HDR capable monitors - and also that game bother with HDR only if HDR capable monitor?

I think it's all about sales and a hype.

If each pixel is capable of producing anything from blackest black to whitest white - what is there for monitor to do?

    What do you think?

    :)

    Gaming monitor Xbox one X

If you can live without HDR, LG make pretty decent 4K monitors with HDMI 2.0 and Freesync support.

You wont see worthwhile HDR PC LCD monitors until well into 2018, real HDR in LCD is expensive.

    Project Scorpio Monitor Discussion

I know the Scorpio reveal is only a few days away but I thought I would start this thread to talk about monitors that will fully support the specs of the new Xbox. As far as I can tell, for gaming monitors anyway, there are only a few monitors out there
that support freesync at 4K with 1ms response time. But I believe the Scorpio will have FreeSync 2? Currently the closest monitors I can think of is the non-released ASUS PG27UQ and Acer XB272-HDR but these have G-SYNC.

Do any known monitors support 4K, 1ms response time, HDR, FreeSync 1/2 and at least 60Hz?

I am not positive but I think through HDMI the Scorpio can only support 60Hz unless I missed something. Guess we will find out Sunday.

Lastly, who ever will be buying the console, is anyone else upgrading their monitors?

Are you going to sacrifice anything when looking for monitors?

If the console works more like a PC, why not get a 2k monitor, 144Hz, 1ms and HDR and FreeSync 1/2 since the 4k monitors are harder to find from my searching around.

Why HDR monitors - it's all about the source?

That is what's called fake or pseudo HDR and has been on cameras even iPhones the past few years, heck even Half Life 2 way back did fake HDR. At the most basic level your photo-shopping in the effect.

It's not the real deal, that actually requires 10-bit hardware displays to deliver 1024 shades, gradients and tones in the image. Non-HDR TV's are 8-bit and can only handle 256 shades. HDR displays also require very carefully configured brightness levels
    for it to work effectively.

So yes you can fake HDR but it isn't anywhere near as good as the real thing.

  5. Thank you.

But are there even lcd or other technology that do the real thing?

Even doing 16.6 million colors is a lot of questions asked.

Is it really about that nuance, seems more it's about recalibrating images to work like our eyes - not being linear.

A ccd chip in camera does not know what the surrounding pixels are fed, or the contrast to those pixels. It would be after processing is my thinking - and the important part.

So getting image adjusted to non-linear contrast so it displays correctly on a linear display, kind of.

But don't know, just seems more likely.

Cerny at Sony showed some images of some scenery in the sept 7th presentation of PS Pro - and the major difference in one image so was different it was not about any extra bits or something, it some sunset as I recall.

But games know which are the objects they render and could see to that it looks as our eyes would perceive it, I think. So knowing the object, and also where there is contrast between surroundings would help.

Since upscaling to 4K can interpolate what pixels should be efficiently, guessing HDR processing can too. Just guessing again of course.

    HDR on Series S Issues

Hello, how are you? My name is Mateus. I'm an Independent Advisor and I'll be glad to help you today.

First, welcome to the Xbox community.

I believe I'm having this issue due to the monitor only supporting 1080P 60 with AutoHDR/HDR10.

Why are some OSD functions of ASUS monitors grayed out (unavailable for selection) after connecting to Xbox Series S/X?

Under the HDR setting, the ASUS monitor gives the dominant power to the source side, only as long as the source side turns on HDR, the monitor will handshaking with the source side, and the HDR function will be turned on directly

The color gamut, brightness, and contrast under HDR all have standard regulations. In order to avoid turning on other functions and causing HDR to not perform normally, ASUS monitors will turn off some OSD options under HDR.

    Xbox One S HDR issue

The bottom line is something about the HDR coming from the Xbox is being handled differently than all the other HDR sources that are plugged into the same receiver. It’s very curious

Why does Microsoft intentially produce visual artefacts on XBox Series S?

Yeah I do not understand why microsoft won't make hdr available in 1080 & 1440p resolutions making it only avaible in 4k . I'm sure it's an easy fix on Microsoft's end . They really try to do all they can to make customers happy with requests maybe it has not been addressed enough PS5 has this hdr feature available in 1080p and 1440p . So what happenes when someone buys a monitor that supports 1440p HDR and gamers can't enjoy the games they want to because resolution has to be in 4k so the monitor they just bought can't be used to full potential . Hdr makes gaming look better in general it's not also about resolution only imo
