Why download games and why does it take so long?

Just bought an xbox one with destiny game disc. I inserted the game its says ready to play. I try to play it and its says it needs to download. Its been downloading for 3 hours and still at 57%?

Should it take this long or something wrong with my Xbox?

I checked all the network stuff and its downloading at 19MB per second.

It says its downloaded 14GB already.

With Xbox 360 I insert my disc and start playing immediately, why do I have download GB of data to play the game?

Is this the norm?

Why does it take so long to download games?

I recently got an xbox one and have had very little play time because it appears to take ages to install games. I have been out of the loop in regards to tech for a while now so maybe I'm making a silly mistake. Why do I even need to install games. On the
360 all I did was put the disc in and play. But now I need to install the game which for Halo 5 has taken 2 hours and is still not done. How is this an advancement in gaming. It also means you use up your hard drive space massively as instead of using it to
keep save files you have used up 60 GB for one game? Is there a way to play without installing, can I not just put the disc in and play?

Why does it take so long to download games?

The discs have to be installed because the disc readers can not read them fast enough during gameplay. All discs have to be installed, there is no way around that (PS4 does the same thing). When you are installing, it will usually download updates for the
game at the same time. If you try installing while in offline mode, that can cut down on the time.

Thanks I'll try that. I'm still not happy with this installing games though and waiting ages and only being able to have several games installed at once. It's a backwards step in gaming in my eyes.

I tried downloading destiny free trial and after two hours it was 7 percent downloaded. I deleted it and am not going to download from Microsoft again. I can get a disk on Amazon and get it here before this game downloads. This is ridiculous and of course
when the gaming population increases it will get much worse. Downloading a game makes as much sense as screen doors on a submarine.

Halo is a 60 GB download so it will take a long time to download. What I did was leave the console on overnight while everyone was sleeping and not using the internet. It took me two nights to completely download the game at a connection of only 5MB down.
