    The Xbox is basically a computer right? Wouldn't it stand to reason that the HDD would become fragmented over time? Shouldn't we have a way to remedy that? And in a industry where performance is paramount - especially as more advanced/taxing games are developed;
shouldn't we have a performance-boosting option like ready boost? How would I suggest this to Microsoft?

    :)

It's far more ready than any COD I've ever played. I'm not sure how people can say that it isn't ready.

Their contact details are readily available on the internet.

I wouldn't be surprised to see that they have such features already and just don't burden the forum speculating armchair I.T. crowd with the specifics.

If they are the only time they would ever get run is during an update or something they won't give you access to it. The whole point of a console over a PC for a lot of people is it's easy to use and there's no hassle like worrying about maintenance

it may have ... just maybe it does not need any user input so might be automatic, but I wouldn't know for sure.

Thanks all, you've given me a lot to think about. To answer some questions; I do see a delay in opening certain apps opening since getting over about 70% of my internal storage- which is my reason for this thread.

As far as I am aware console HD's work slightly differently and have built in systems for this kind of maintenance, pretty sure theres another thread about it recently where someone gave a more techy reason for why consoles don't need optimisation tools.

Microsoft has said the One has a built in defrag and according to them it's actually not that big of a deal because the console uses larger file sizes and very little delete/write going on.

More than likely the delay your seeing in apps loading has nothing to do with your HD but rather your memory. Even if you shut down every app after using it there will still processes left running. The more apps you launch without a restart the slower you'll
    get.

Thanks Randver, that is very helpful information. No one has said anything about the idea of porting the "readyboost" feature from Windows over to the One - Is that something that is also unnecessary? I have a middle grade gaming laptop using 14 GB of ready
boost (NTFS formatting let's you go up higher than the usual 4GB) and I have to say that I notice a big difference from using that ready boost thumb drive. Not that I'm having any problems out of the games I play on my Xbox, but as games become more advanced
I would at least like to have the option.

  14. But 'ReadyBoost' isn't RAM. If you have a system such a s laptop with 4GB of RAM installed, and add an 4GB ReadyBoost enabled Flash drive, you do realise you're not getting another 4GB to work with right? Flash storage doesn't work like RAM and can not
store and retrieve data anywhere near as fast as real RAM.

ReadyBoost makes use of a Windows system developed under Windows Vista called 'Superfetch'. From Windows Vista onwards, Superfetch monitors the programs you use on your computer and automatically loads their application files and libraries into your computer’s
memory (RAM) ahead of time. When you launch the application, it will start faster — your computer reads its files from memory, which is faster, instead of from disk, which is slower. And when I say disk, I mean a typical 'hard disk', which unless it's an
SSD, it would be mechanical. Readyboost can also use Superfetch to work faster with certain files.

But there is a caveat to all this seemingly wonderful free speed boost. Superfetch on Flash storage works best with frequently accessed smaller files, it won't work well with bigger files. Like I've already said, USB storage is slower than RAM. It’s better
to store SuperFetch data in your computer’s RAM than on a USB stick. Therefore, ReadyBoost only helps if your computer doesn’t have enough RAM. If your system has more than enough free RAM available, Readyboost won't do anything at all. It only helps when
your system is getting short on RAM, and only then in certain circumstances.

Xbox One has 8GB of RAM, around 5GB is for games, the rest is for the system operation and Apps. All Xbox one Apps are designed and optimised to use a certain amount of RAM, there would be no need to add more at a future date.

As I see it, the console has more than enough RAM for games. Upgrades for games console have been done before with limited success. Most consumers don't like them, they've never sold particularly well, and unlike PC enthusiasts, most console gamers are not
technically minded and they don't want or seek upgrades on their consoles. Xbox One does not need nor will it ever have a RAM upgrade.

Thanks for that Obsessive Power - I knew much of that, but what I didn't know was the bit about the Xbox One's memory. 8 Gigs huh? Yeah, there would be no reason for readyboost.
