Why does xbox require Online connection to play disc games?

I am more than curious as to find out why xbox has over the past year or so now requiring you to have online/internet access in order to play games?

My internet went out last saturday i have 4 games on hard copy (disc) Battlefield 4, Mafia 3, fallout 4 and black ops 3 (all old games)

tried to play a bit of single player campaign.. launched the xbox with no net access.. tried mafia 3.. (you dont have the rights to play this game).. tried loading up fallout 4 (you dont have the rights for this game).. tried to load up battlefield 4.. (and
again.. you dont own the rights to this game..) start to see the pattern yes?..

sooo.. i hooked up my phone to hotspot mode access to wifi via my fone.. and hey presto.. like magic all 4 games work with out a hitch...????

How come i can NO LONGER play disc versions of games with out having access to the internet? before you say.. make sure you got your xbox set to home.. and give me a reach around.. i have been on xbox for more than 10 years i am pretty familiar with how
it works, and doing a quick search in here their was a post made around feb 2019? of the same issue with some dude not being able to play disc versions of his games cos he had no access to the net for his son....

so is there any reason why i can not play xbox discs with out having access to the internet? and why did they change this?

It was set to offline mode. issue still exists

set console to offline mode if you lose net, than carry on playing.

Xbox live is only for if you need to use the online services with Xbox. Certain games that are Online only will require it.

If you're installing a game that is on a disc, then you only need an internet connection. Bare in mind that if that game requires online play, you will require Xbox live. You will see a note on the disc box that it requires Xbox Live

part of the games these days are actual downloads and don't come on the disc due to space limitations, the bigger games get the more that will need to be downloaded before playing.

also some games require online only too.

and if you ever play backward compat games then you need connection to download the actual game which is wrapped in an emulator as it does not install the back compat games from disc.

most platforms require a connection these days to play anything.
