Why does the Xbox One X update only work if the blue ray drive is functional?

My blue ray drive started failing as soon as the warranty ran out on my xbox console. This appears to cause any updates to fail, locking up when it starts trying to apply the update, 52-58 percent. I pulled the xbox hard drive and placed it in a hard
drive bay and reviewed the error log. It had a long list of failures related to the blue ray drive. Why would the update need to be tied this drive, the rest of the device works perfectly. This appears to be a software decision made by the developers of
the update process. This also appears to be a common reason for devices to fail when updating.

Xbox one will not Recognize DVD or backwards compatible games

sounds like the red laser diode has failed, this will cause all dvd reading functions to cease, blue ray will work and xbox one games as they are blue ray as the diode will be ok.

may need to go for repair to get the drive fixed or swapped out.

That's absurd, Microsoft updates there console to blue ray which have to be installed, we all know blue rays can be up to 50Gb disc, then puts a 500Gb Hard drive in the console, with no option to upgrade to a bigger hard drive, especially when the Xbox
One operating system is taking a good fair amount of the hard drive...What the heck is this.

They better allow us to use an external USB 3.0 Hard drive, or my Xbox one is going back to the Microsoft Store!!!

Microsoft, Why did you limit storage? you know these blue ray disc are freaking huge! Gosh this makes me angry!

Xbox cdrom or whatever people call it

    Hi,

Scarlet will have an optical drive, the same type of drive the One S and the One X use which is a UHD Blue-ray drive.

    2001 Space Odyssey 4KUHD 0x91d70001 error 🙄

It seems to be a common problem with certain 4K UHD Blue Ray disks on the Xbox One and Series X.

My Xbox One X refuses to play certain 4K UHD Blue Ray disks as well and I know it's not the disks that's causing the problem as they play on my stand alone 4K Blue Ray player.

    Series X question

I ended up doing that as I was a bit worried about the optical drive in my Xbox One x when it refused to play certain 4k Blue ray disks.
