Why does my xbox wireless controller lag my game to the point it is unplayble while it is connected by bluetooth

    Hello Skinnygaming925,

    Thanks for clarifying the details.

If that is the case, as long as your controller is updated through cable then you should be good to go. As we know that you understand and have updated the controller. Xbox Controller can only be updated with cable in PC, for guide please check - Update your Xbox Wireless Controller | Xbox Support.

    • By the way are you using an adapter, or your computer has built-in Bluetooth? Should you be connecting to an adapter, you may try to use a different one to see if issue persist.
    • When you said Xbox Wireless Controller lag my game, do you mean the controller stops working while the game continues or the game slows down or stops working or crashes?

Going into the main point of your concern, we have here troubleshot that you may need in your controller about this issue:

    • Check your batteries:

Verify that your controller batteries aren’t causing this issue. If your controller won’t power on at all, replace the controller batteries with fresh ones and make sure they’re inserted correctly into the controller.
Note The Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 uses a built-in battery, so if you’re using an Elite Series 2, skip this step.

    • Manually power cycle your controller

To turn off the controller, press and hold the Xbox button for 5-10 seconds, until the controller powers off. Then press and hold the Xbox button again for the controller to turn back on.

Connect your controller to the console with a USB cable

You can use a USB to micro-USB cable to connect your controller to your Xbox. Plug the micro-USB end into the top of the controller, and the USB end into the USB slot on the side or back of the console. The cable will provide both power and a wired connection to the controller.
      • Note The new Xbox Wireless Controller (included with Xbox Series X|S) and Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 use a USB-C cable for charging.
      • If your controller works when connected to your console with a USB cable. If it doesn’t work when connected to your console with a USB cable, your controller needs to be repaired or replace. For guide: Request an Xbox controller replacement | Xbox Support

Aside from that if Xbox app is not in use for playing these games, then you must seek assistance from the game support to check your controller can be configured in the settings. The mapping of controller is usually available and unique to every game.

Additionally, the vibration (or “rumble”) doesn’t work when playing games on a PC while the controller is connected through Bluetooth. Learn more here: Connect an Xbox Wireless Controller to a Windows device | Xbox Support

As the controller itself is plug and play this should function as it is programmed to be unless you were playing with 3rd party apps that may hinder the functionality of the controller. Please update us on how it went.

    Regards,

Why does my xbox wireless controller lag my game to the point it is unplayble while it is connected by bluetooth

    Hello Skinnygaming925,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

We understand that you have been getting lag with the Xbox controller you are using in your gameplay. There is a possibility that this issue happens because of interference around the controller and the platform you are using. Let us check on this together and sort this out in timely manner for you to get back to gaming.

Based on your description, this issue happens during your playtime with Trackmania 2020 and Rocket League and around 8/10 vibrations were disabled. In this case, this may need isolation. We would like to ask few questions, please answer them below:

    1. Are these games (Trackmania 2020 and Rocket League) installed from Xbox app? Or was this installed from Microsoft Store?
    2. Are you using Xbox Accessories app - Microsoft Store Apps for your Xbox controller?
    3. Since this shows lag in the games mentioned, may we know if issue persist if you connect your controller wired while gaming?
    4. Are there any devices/gadgets that could possibly interfere with the controller in your game play?
    5. May we ask if issue persist if you use the controller on other devices like Xbox console, phone or other PC.

There is a tip here for reducing wireless interference that you may try:

Types of interference that can degrade your signal are:

Active interference. Active interference is caused when other electronic devices are broadcasting either a wireless signal or some other form of electromagnetic interference. Common causes include microwaves, ovens, air conditioners, CRT TVs, wireless headsets and speakers, other wireless networks, and other electronic devices.

Note Try to minimize potential interference by removing any electronic devices between your Xbox console and your wireless router.

Passive interference. Passive interference occurs when a wireless signal passes through objects, causing the signal to be weakened and refracted. Common causes include concrete, glass, lead and copper piping, insulation, mirrors, tile, and plaster. Interference can also occur when the console is too close to the wireless router. The ideal distance from the wireless router to the console is between 5 and 50 feet.

Attenuation. Attenuation is a natural occurrence in wireless signals. It means that a signal degrades over distance, causing what are commonly referred to as “range issues.” Routers have a limited broadcast range, although this varies between devices.

Line of sight. When dealing with active or passive interference, a critical component is line of sight. Draw an imaginary straight line from your router to your Xbox console, and then see if you can turn off or move any devices along that line that could cause active interference.

You can also move the console or router to minimize passive interference. Moving the devices outside of entertainment cabinets or desks can often help improve wireless signals.

USB 3.0 devices. Some USB 3.0 devices can also cause wireless interference for 2.4 GHz networks. If you must use 2.4 GHz wireless, avoid plugging in USB peripherals to your Xbox One and your Windows 10 device.

    Xbox Wireless Headset Audio Latency

I do not own the Xbox wireless headset, but I had read review from rting.com that it has 200ms latency. While I do not have an explanation to why the lag, the lag is probably expected.

I also notice there is some lag on controller 3.5 output. If you use monitor speaker and controller headphone at the same time, you will notice the lag, although very minimal.
