    Why does my Xbox controller only connect to wireless via USB?


    Hi I seem to be having issues with my wireless controller for my Xbox Series X.

    When you insert the batteries the Xbox button flashes then the pad rumbles and the light turns off and the pad becomes unresponsive, unless it is already plugged in via USB.

    If I try and use it normally, it doesn't turn on when you hold the Xbox button. It also won't turn on the console when the Xbox button is pressed normally.

    However, if I connect it via USB whilst there are no batteries inside it works, then strangely if I insert the batteries and remove the pad from USB it remains in sync with the Xbox and it can used wirelessly for the remainder of that session, that is until I turn the console off or try to update the software.

    It's not a battery issue or console issue, I have another controller that works fine.

    When I tried to update the software it told me it had failed to do so, then when I tried it again it said I didn't need an update.

    Hi,

    The 3.5mm headphone jack on Xbox One/Series X|S controllers (including Elite controllers) does not work when connected via Bluetooth. It will only work via USB or the official Xbox wireless adaptor.

    Hi,

    Sorry bit there is no 'correct 360 controller cable'.

    A 360 wireless controller remains wireless even when plugged in, it does not become wired if you connect via USB. The reason is because the controller isn't designed to send data down a USB cable.

    Only the Xbox One controller works wired and wireless.

    Greetings.

    The Elite V1 does not support bluetooth. It can only connect to a computer using an Xbox Wireless USB Adapter stick, and that's what the sync button on the controller is for. You can however still use the controller via USB cable.

    An update should fix this, however, since it's not letting you update the controller, the issue may be the controller itself, and the next option if the controller update didn't work is getting it replaced.

    Controller has hard time connecting to XBOX

    Start with the basics at
    support.xbox.com/.../wireless-controller-disconnects-frequently-or-cannot-connect    . If you have to connect the usb cable to the wireless controller it may be a power issue. Not 100% sure but I think the usb cable only provides power it does not provide a
    communication channel. Meaning, even if you connect the wireless with the usb charging cable all the communication is still happening via wireless.
