Why does my game need a 60GB UPDATE?

It's been a little while since I played Doom 2016, and I just decided to play it again. However, I was met with an update that's 60GB in size. That's more than the game itself. I'm already getting low on space on a 1TB drive, and it's mostly updates. My
question: why does this game NEED a 60GB update? I understand patches, but help me understand why the game played just fine before, and yet now it needs another 60 gigs just to function. I don't care about add-ons, but I can't pick and choose what gets updated.
I just have to do it or I can't play the game. On every other console I have, I could just put a game in and play, but now games need infinite space just to do the bare minimum. Why is this? What will be different 60GB later if it was already working fine?

Updates like everyone else said. I believe some of it was for the Xbox One X update.

That makes sense, at least. I just don't see this ending up well for me. I'm terrified to even attempt to open up Destiny because of the updates, and to realistically prepare for future game purchases, I would need to buy a hard drive tower. I might as
well start renting space in a warehouse if I want to play games further into my life, unless they find a way to make this more efficient.

Every game is different and developers add different content, se depending on what they add the size will vary.

check your console settings if the option to download 4K content is enabled, this may be one of the reasons for having such a large size for updating

If you go to the game's forums, the developers generally post what the updates are to let you know what is included in them and why they are so large.
