Why does Game Pass PC CONSTANTLY refuse to launch games?

This started not long after Starfield launched. I'm not sure if it's a coincidence, but since then games will randomly refuse to launch, and I'll see a generic "Something went wrong" error:

Why does Game Pass PC CONSTANTLY refuse to launch games? [IMG]

The link to the error code is ZERO help for understanding what has actually gone wrong. After searching around a bit the most common suggestion was "Reinstall Windows 11" which I eventually did. This seemed to fix the issue for a short while, but it has again resurfaced.

Another suggestion was to force close the Xbox App and the process "GamingServices" which I also did, and did not fix the issue.

The weird thing is that it only seems to affect some games some of the time. Unfortunately, it seems to be whatever game I was most recently playing.

I don't know if anyone has any suggestions for solutions, but I'm basically ready to just cancel my Game Pass subscription because I've spent more time trying to troubleshoot this issue than actually playing anything.

    :)

Why does Game Pass PC CONSTANTLY refuse to launch games?

    Hello realityhack,

Thanks for letting me know my prior solution didn't fix the issue. I do have some further steps to try:

Solution 1: Run the Command Prompt

    • Press Windows logo key to open the Start Menu, and then enter "CMD" in the search bar.
    • Right-click Command prompt, and then select Run as administrator.
    • Enter the following command line in Command prompt: sc.exe stop licensemanager
    • Press the enter key to run the command
    • The command prompt will output some text to indicate if the command was processed successfully. Once command prompt completes the task, try launching the game again.

If the issue persists, try restarting your computer.

Solution 2: In the meantime, this can be a bit odd. But try and double check this:

    • Press Windows button and type Services
    • On Services App from the list of results, press right-click and run it as administrator.
    • Scroll to the bottom and find the following services:
      IP Helper
      Xbox Live Auth Manager
      Xbox Live Game Save
      Xbox Live Networking Service
      Gaming Services

And do this with each of the services listed above:
    • Right-click over the service and select Properties.
    • Find the Startup type section and make sure it’s set to Automatic (if not, change it to automatic)
    • If the service isn’t started, click Start to start the services.

Restart your PC and try again.

I hope this helps resolve your issue and allows you to enjoy your Game Pass subscription. Let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

    Kind regards,

Why does Game Pass PC CONSTANTLY refuse to launch games?

    Hello realityhack,

Thank you for sharing this with us and welcome to Xbox Forums.

Based on the information you provided, it appears that you're experiencing issues with Game Pass PC. I understand how you are feeling right now especially when games refuse to launch. We really appreciate your time and effort for trying for this concern we have. Let's try to troubleshoot the issue together.

Note: You can skip the steps you have done from your end.

Firstly, I would suggest checking if your PC meets the minimum system requirements for the games you're trying to launch. You can find the system requirements for each game on the Microsoft Store page or on the game's official website. If your PC doesn't meet the minimum requirements, the game may not launch or may not run properly.

Next, I would recommend checking for any updates for the Xbox app and Gaming Services. To do this, open the Microsoft Store app and click on the three dots in the top right corner. Select "Downloads and updates" and then click on "Get updates". This will check for any available updates for your apps and services.

If there are no updates available, I would suggest resetting the Xbox app. To do this, right-click on the Start button and select "Apps and Features". Scroll down and click on "Xbox" and then click on "Advanced options". Scroll down and click on "Reset". This will reset the Xbox app to its default settings.

If resetting the Xbox app doesn't work, you can try resetting the Gaming Services. To do this, press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box. Type "services.msc" and press Enter. Scroll down and find "Gaming Services". Right-click on it and select "Properties". Click on the "Stop" button and then click on "Apply" and "OK". Next, right-click on "Gaming Services" again and select "Start". This will restart the Gaming Services.

If none of these steps work, you can try reinstalling the games that are not launching. To do this, open the Xbox app and go to "My Library". Find the game that is not launching and click on the three dots next to it. Select "Uninstall" and then reinstall the game.

If you're still experiencing issues after trying these steps, I would suggest uninstalling and reinstall the Xbox game pass app.

Why does Game Pass PC CONSTANTLY refuse to launch games?

Hi again Mae, sorry for the delayed reply. Solution 1, stopping the license manager seems to have resolved the issue. However, I still need to do this almost daily - do you have any insight into why the license manager is misbehaving and what could be done to resolve it?

I'd love for Game Pass to just work without having to continually stop the license manager. Thanks!
