The BD Drive isn't fast enough to read all of that information from the Blu-Ray Disc so it is required that the games be installed to become playable.

This wasn't an issue for the Xbox 360 because the DVD Drive was capable of reading everything from the DVD Disc

The problem is with all Optical Medium. A Disc can only physically spin so fast. Unless someone wants to make an Optical Drive that can spin at or above 100,000rpm it simply cannot pull data fast enough from an Optical Disc. This
is inherently what is wrong with Optical Disc and a greater problem for Blu-ray as a Storage Medium. The Industry has known this since day one and why most want to abandon Optical Disc all together.

The original plan of the 24 hour check-in DRM was designed specifically to not have the problem of Optical Disc with nothing more then a delivery method. Leave it to the internet to complain over "owner-ship" when 99.99% of them
didn't even know what they were raging against.

 

The USB flash drive idea would be good idea for a disc-less console. It kinda have that feel of the old days of video game cartridges like Atari 2600.

 

I'm not to sure how long an usb stick can hold info without any power going to it ? Nand's if keep cool are up to 2 years storage without power

in which case they would have to use ROM's like the old days, cheapest long term media storage for game data probs is blu ray for them.

 

The 24 hour check-in "blew chunks" and the majority knew it.

I'm just happy to know that in the event of becoming a Captain of a nuclear sub, the X Box One doesn't turn into a brick; wouldn't have that piece of mind with the original "vision". ;-)

I also believe the case about Blu-ray drives are not fast enough to read content on a game. I mean have you seen the sizes of Xbox 1 games they're easily 20-40GB or slightly more, big. Not to mention when it comes time to download DLC and Xbox Live Updates
for games. Game installs on Xbox 360 are NOT mandatory because Xbox 360 games are only a few GB's or couple hundred MB's big, and the HDD/DVD drive is capable of reading it without a mandatory install or it seriously affecting gameplay. But Microsoft has implied
that saving and loading the game is quicker if you install the disc game rather than just running it off the disc. If Xbox 1 didn't have mandatory installs and you ran games off the Blu-ray disc which can support games as big as around 50GB big!!, imagine
the serious lag and loading times and stuttering you could encounter, it would probably be totally unbearable.

I'm not that knowledgeable about computers and stuff, but I'm pretty sure that it would impossible to have a BD Drive to run a game entirely without being installed into the HDD.

Because DVDs are too small to hold current gen games, and Blu Ray is to slow to play current gen games off of directly.

 

Nintendo just applied for a patent for a new disc-less device... which some believe to be their next console, The NX. Knowing Nintendo, I wouldn't be surprised to see them take the lead and release a new console without discs and use USB flash drives for
games. You can get 128GB flash drives from $20 on Amazon.com now... I don't know if anyone has figured out a way to pirate games from an XB1 external HD yet, but I would imagine this would be the future of gaming.

You can also make some pretty cool looking drives to coincide with the games.

@Bray alot of the speculation around the Nintendo patents is that they would be going back to cartridges.

 

@x24hrs at this point it's all speculation until they officially announce it. But the patent showed a SD memory card slot which would lead me to believe that they are considering flash memory over cartridges.

The novelty of going back to them is neat, I just don't see them going back and spending more to manufacture.

 

SD slot could be for game save's ..

I said it before

blu ray is the cheapest media storage for long term game data

why would they give themselves more cost using SD when blu ray works fine

try reading up on the tech SD,Nand etc have limited life time use...

I'm not saying it's a bad idea , just cant see them going a rout to store media when they already have a cheaper way IMO

and I very much doubt they would go back to ROM cartridges they had limitations and cost a lot more to produce..
