Why do we install ?

I had a thought today, when we buy a game we have to do a mandatory install which eats up our disk space fast. Since we still need the disk in to play ( I get that ) my question is why do we need to install ? Only a few games last gen needed to install a
full game to the hard disk , most could be played on the fly without installing massive amounts of data from the disk. So I guess I want to know, why do we install ? Load times ? if that's the case then give us the option, you remember what those are Microsoft,
don't you?, a option to do a full install if we choose or longer load times but disk space is saved. The lack of options on this machine really is appalling.

Because it is not possible to read the data efficiently from a Bluray drive at 27 MB/s which is the maximum 6x read speed for the device in xbox

I agree with xTc NaturaL, because I just bought COD GHOSTS and by and by what I think it is going to take at least A WEEK TO DOWNLAD

 

I believe it is because BR discs don't have a fast enough read/seek time for full audio/video rendering on the fly.

 

It might have something to do with games being larger this generation. Some games can be 40gb or larger. The information to run the game might be easier/quicker to read from the hard drive than read it off of the disc. Xbox One is not the only one, the
PS4 also requires the full game to be installed for it to run.

DRM.

Day one patches/updates for Newely released games etc. Who ever heard of that before current gen? I never!

If optical drives can't keep up, then why not do what Wolfensten does and simply put part of the game on the HDD and run the rest from the optical drive?

Thus it is my firm conviction that mandatory installs R for corporate DRM policies.

 

or basically provide games on USB 3 sticks instead of discs, have them encrypted so they cannot be read or copied on pc, they then use less material and less physical space. easier to use and less likely to get scratched and can be read from directly.

 

A hdd will always be the best option, also less wear on the blu ray drive in the long term.

I would rather install the game and run it off the hdd and only need disk in drive to verify owner ship of game than have to wait for massive load times from an blu ray drive.

yea and how much extra would they need to charge for a whooping grate usb 3 45 gig stick .. cant see that being very cost effective ...just look at he price of an fast usb 32gig stick now add the cost of the game on top of it ... no thanks disks work fine

I can get 32GB sticks for £7 that are usb 3.0, so price when bought in bulk would be negligible

 

Microsoft/game publishers can get blu ray disks for pence in bulk, again it's all about profit margin's ..

 

it would remove the need to have a full fledged blueray disc drive installed into the machine. paving the way to make the machine smaller

 

might as well go back to cartridge they would probs be more reliable than nand tech lol

 

like I say it's a business and it's all about profit margin's no matter what the product is.
