Why do we have to pay to play free games?

Why must we pay for xbox gold in order to play free online games such as Roblox and Fortnite?

Here is a post from somebody that actually play ps3 look up my account if you want to. Just saying.

Why should anyone buy an Xbox over ps3? Ps3"has free has FREE online, Xbox doesn't; and bull**** about psn not having secure server is a lie. As far as mw 1, 2, and 3, they have been hacked just as bad on Xbox as on ps3.

I can go on cod ghost, bo2, any reasonably recent game and play a smooth, un hacked, FREE game of mp.... On playstation. Also, Xbox doesn't have as good exclusives, ya it has bungie (the makers of halo) but honestly, playstation's go to company, naughty
dog, is far more prestigious, they made the last of us, which has something like 500 game of the year awards, and on top of that, they have the uncharted series, which is also highly decorated.

So think about, which console are you get more out of, and which one is sucking us your money?

 

You don't have to pay to play free games. If you are talking about paying for online multiplayer. Then it's been that way since the beginning of Xbox Live, and has no plans to change.

 

You have to have gold membership to play online games.

The price of gold membership helps cover the cost of running the service and keeping it the best option available to play online

 

As has been said before , in another post, Xbox live has always been a paid service, even if the games were free online multiplayer , text and chat would still be under the gold restrictions. I would assume that you also play other online games , that
use the gold level functionality? Everyone forgets that its not just the ability to play online but that Xbox live is an ecosystem that needs to be maintained and updated to make sure that everyone has the best experiance that they can

 

The money we spend on Xbox Live goes to the employees and equipment costs to run online servers.

 

As others mentiomed most people dont just play freee games also.most will gladly pay for.the security and upkeep of.the servers as they are 99.9 uptime

Dont forget sony and nintendo have constant security issues

 

The short answer: It's just the way it is.

But others have mentioned the reasoning behind the charges, as it does cost to keep the servers running and maintain them, and to buy more epuipment/ replace equipment, etc.

 

Mainly because you play in a "safe" network...you don't have to be afraid of nothing, my account was stolen and they also use all the money on my prepaid card...MS have resolve it in 1 day and all my money was refund...on pc who will refund you? No one.

 

That is how the Xbox Live network is used. Everyone has to pay to play online, regardless of what game or how much you paid for the game.

 

Gray, Youve never worked with steam much have you? you can buy a game, play it and if you hate it or it plays like trash on your PC you can get a refund no problem

and theres a number of people who have had steam accounts hacked, when contacting steam they require hard proof of identity (pictures of CC or something) and take care of you

 

With the 360s it didnt make sense to pay for it when most games were P2P... but now they actually use MS servers, so it does make sense that you have to pay for access to a server that costs a fortune to run.. still though, if theres any P2P games for
the One they should be excluded since that is plain robbery to charge someone for a connection that you have little to do with

 

That would be due to the game accessing MS's online features. It is the same on PS4 and Switch as well.

 

It is same as on other consoles.

You pay for service to play online, you pay employees, servers to run the game online. It is simple. You can play free games offline if it is supported.
