Why do players linger in parties instead of being removed from the party chat?

I’m sure a lot of us are aware and have noticed, that when a friend or another player leaves the party chat, you don’t know when exactly they’ve left anymore.

Besides manually checking and seeing they do show as being disconnected. It doesn’t matter if you have a special edition Xbox one s still like me, or an over glorified series x/s.

I say that because the exact same quality control issues persist with next gen too. I have one friend who’s gone through several controllers, because they’ve all failed with the same joystick/D pad issue; another has gone through a few. My original controller that came with the $600 special edition bundle has joystick drift with all 3… So I’ll leave it at that as I could write a college paper on that issue alone. Anyways.

I have an understanding as to why this is a thing now, (fixing things that weren’t broken) but even for me, it doesn’t directly explain why it is a thing.

I noticed this about several months ago when party chat was having a few various new issues going on, but the older generation players still can’t get an understanding of how it works, as well as why it is a thing now. “This player says they’re disconnected, but they’re still in the party..” No dude, they’re no longer connected. It’s the same concept as if you had experienced a connection issue with the party chat; you literally cannot hear or be heard. And then they get removed from the party on its own some time later. Whether that’s over the course of time or it’s triggered by someone else leaving and it tells us they did.

This is typically just a concern when there genuinely is an issue trying to join the party and staying in, (or we don’t know if there is an issue or not) or there’s drama or a sensitive subject about someone in the party.

How would I even try to explain how and why this is a thing to older gamers?

And why would this be even a thing anyways?

Supposedly we can’t even sit in our own party chat just incase a friend is on and they wanna talk, without either one of us having to stop in the middle of what we’re doing to send or accept an invite. Or you just want to avoid obnoxious players who have an open mic, or you don’t want to be that annoying player, for the duration of the game you’re on. I’ve found that being in your own open to friends only party chat is the best course of action all around. But, instead, it removes you from the party after xx of time of nothing picked up in the chat.

If it’s because of it being too much of a load on servers, hahaha, then how is it not too much of a load to actually remove players from a party they’ve already left, when they did leave? Sounds a lot like one of those make it make sense things to me.

    :)

Why do players linger in parties instead of being removed from the party chat?

Hi Chad, thanks for sharing this, you’re definitely not the only one who’s noticed this behavior with party chat. It can be confusing at first, especially for longtime players used to how it worked in earlier console generations.

When someone leaves a party, it’s expected that they might still appear on the list briefly. This doesn’t mean they’re still connected; it just means the system hasn’t finalized the update yet. In most cases, the player is no longer part of the session, even if their name remains visible for a short time. They won’t be able to hear or speak, and they’ll be removed shortly after.

The reason this happens is due to how party chat is now managed. Xbox uses a cloud-based approach to allow for consistent party functionality across Xbox consoles, Windows, and the Xbox mobile app. This helps keep parties more stable, especially during brief disconnections or network shifts, but can result in a short delay when someone fully leaves.

As for being removed from your own party after a while, that’s usually related to inactivity. If there’s no voice activity for a set period, the system may close the party to conserve network resources. While this may feel limiting in some use cases, it’s part of ensuring resources are managed efficiently across all connected services.

We appreciate you flagging this behavior, and if you think there’s room for improvement, sending feedback through the Xbox Report a Problem app is always a great option.

Here’s the official link where you can send feedback to Xbox:

Are you being completely disconnected from LIVE, or are you just being removed from parties and chats?

    Party chat

My party chat has worked for the most part, but I kept getting some message the other day about being unable to turn party chat on, despite already being in that party and chatting for well over an hour. After leaving the party, starting my own, and inviting
the players from the previous party, the issue ceased to occur. I'm not sure if this is the same issue everyone else is having, but I theorized it was connection or, possibly, NAT related based on whoever is the party leader.

    Xbox Beta and Console Questions

Some betas in the past restricted some features of the console. In one case Party Chat was only available to consoles that were updated and could not Party Chat with consoles that were not in the beta.

To my knowledge the remove option on Connect will remove the program from being viewable from your dashboard at the site.

    Dark Souls (ask the developers)

Same as everyone else. but don't ask why they are removing party chat, they will just give the same answer they've given a hundred times since demon's souls. instead say there are 360 gamers who are angry a feature they pay for is being disabled for
this game and their are gamers who want to chat with friends while playing dark souls and their friends are on other games.

Ask if it would be possible to keep party chat open to people on other games but perhaps stop 2 people playing demon's souls to be in the same party chat. that's an easy fix and I don't think reading the preparetodie forums anyone has suggested it.
