From what it seems, it was for optimization by saving RAM.

Currently tiles transparency it's no longer a personalization option

I've got the transparent tiles and they look good. Best to set the tile colour to something like the grey-ish one, they become more transparent then.

Doc in regards to the transparent tiles, as part of the preview program I was asked if a setting of transparency from 1- 10 would be a good feature. From that I'm expecting that the level of transparency will be adjustable soon in a future update,

Certain colours like grey look more transparent at the moment. Try that.
