Why did my xbox one external harddrive wipe itself after I plugged it into my laptop?

Let's cut to the chase. I've been trying to free up space on my laptop, so I figured "if I plug my xbox one external harddrive into my laptop, I should be able to play some of the games on it, right?" (Xbox play anywhere?) Like maybe minecraft, or forza,
or other games. Anyways, when I plugged it in, my laptop couldn't read it. I didn't download, delete, move, or change anything on the harddrive, because it did not even show that it was connected. When I plugged it back into my xbox, the entire thing was wiped.
All 1500+ GB worth of games were completely gone, and my xbox forced me to reformat it again. I will now be spending the next week redownloading all of my games, again. Can anyone explain why it was wiped? Again, I didnt do anything to it, because the laptop
didn't even read that it was connected. Very upset as to why it would wipe everything after just plugging it into a laptop.

Doesn't the hard drive format to the Xbox one? So he would lose the games if plugged in to a PC or laptop? I could be wrong.

Hi,

this may have been caused by the way Windows is configurerd on your laptop. When you attached the drive I can only assume Windows saw it as 'unformated and Initialised it. This would wipe the custom formatting.

Normally When you attach a Xbox formatted drive to a PC nothing happens, the drive won't show unless you go to Windows Disk Manager.

As for Play Anywhere, while the games are cross compatable, that's where the similarities end. They are two different downloads and are not compatable with each other.

If you want the PC version Of a Play Anywhere game, you'll need to download it Separately from the Windows Store.

Hey there, it sounds like your PC automatically formatted the drive. For the play anywhere titles, you would have to download the games from the Windows Store.

This happened to a frend on a 1TB HDD, the format used for xbox is not the same fo Windows and he tried to use on his laptop to split it, Windows wiped the whole thing and there was nothing to do, he preferred to use it on the xbox so he formated it back
and had to reinstall ALL the games he had.
