there are several reason that could cause it:

1. Your friend changed the Gamertag

2. Your "old" friends account was inactive for over 5 years and the account was deleted

3. Your friends privacy settings are so that only listed friends are able to see the account

I'm afraid the only chance to find your friend would be if you have played a game that has it's own game chat where you can ask for your friend.
