Why can't I make purchases with my Microsoft/Xbox live account?

I want to rent some movies on XBOX Video but I get an error message saying "you cannot make purchases with this account.". I have made purchases of movies and games before, and still have sufficient funds on my account. Please help this has been happening
for over a month.

I am attempting to make the purchase on my Xbox 360 Elite Console. And the option to use my Microsoft Account isn't even showing up, it acts as if I have $0 in it when I spent $40 on it.

I paid $40 to be able to make Purchases on Xbox Live. But due to an error in Microsoft's System I can't even use this money that I purchased with my money to buy something that they'll make profit from. I still don't understand why they can't just register
the currency that I've paid for already.

What's wrong with my account?

Why can't I purchase borderlands 2 with games with gold? When I try to purchase it on my Xbox one, it says I can't make the purchase on the website even though I'm not on it.

Sorry to hear it. If you were able to make purchases in the past but can no longer do so it may be a billing issue with the account.

Please double check commerce.microsoft.com to make sure there are no billing holds on the account. If you cannot find anything there you should still contact phone support to ensure that there are no problems on their end. If you live in North America

Hey there, Shadowhunteryan! I'm very sorry to see any purchasing issues you may be running into! Along with what Onyx said, sometimes this is indicative of someone having a child account and purchases are locked on it. If you have a child account, I suggest
reaching out to the parental account owner to see if they may have changed the settings recently.

Why can't I use the the credit that is on my account? I redeemed an Xbox card I got for Christmas and I can't make a purchase.

GG it doesn't even give me the option to add my debit card to make a purchase, which is strange in itself because DC's are the standard payment option in the UK, but back to my main point why can't I use my paypal account in conjunction with what money I
have in my Microsoft account to make a purchase?

This is because at the present time currency cannot be used to purchase a subscription with the exception of the Music Pass on Xbox One. This is stated in their

Currency FAQ:

Can I buy an Xbox Live Gold membership with the currency in my Microsoft account?

The currency in your Microsoft account can’t be used to buy an Xbox Live Gold membership at this time.

Can I buy music with the currency in my Microsoft account?

Beginning Holiday 2013, you will be able to use the currency in your Microsoft account to sign up for an Xbox Music Pass on Xbox One. Dates and availability of music for purchase varies by device and region.

The wording "at this time" makes we wonder if they will allow it in the future though, but as it stands now this is why you can't use the currency to purchase the subscription.

FIFA Points purchases show on Microsoft Billing Account. The Points that I did not purchase do not show on my XBox Live Account, probably up to around £70 worth. I have not yet worked out the exact amount. Microsoft are saying that the purchases were made
from my console but my XBox Live Account shows that this is not at all correct. If the purchases were made from my console then they would show in my XBox Live Account.

I had already mentioned the XBox Live and Microsoft Billing Accounts.

Anyway, I can no longer use this account because if I add Microsoft Points to it they will be stolen just like the previous sets before I realized there was a problem. My son is the gamer and before it is mentioned, no he did not make these purchases either!
