Why can't I get an Xbox refund?

You may be eligible to cancel immediately with a refund; however, not all subscription charges can be refunded.

Please, follow these steps:

Go to Services & subscriptions and sign in with the Microsoft account you used to purchase your subscription.

Find your subscription and select Manage.

Note that if you see Turn on recurring billing instead of a link that says Manage, this means your subscription is already set to expire on the date shown and you won’t be charged after this date. You can continue to use the subscription’s benefits until it expires.

Select Cancel subscription and follow the instructions.

Note that if you’re eligible for a refund, you’ll see an option to cancel immediately with a refund.

I'm really sorry, but as the Xbox support agent told you, they cannot transfer any money from one account to another and they cannot refund money you added to your Microsoft account as this is against the Terms of Sale (which they sent you).

What I would suggest you to do in this situation is to use your Microsoft account balance to purchase a $50 Xbox gift card and reedem it on your son's account. Or you can buy a game your son wants to play as a gift and also redeem it on his account. That's the only two possible things to do in this case.

Try contacting xbox support don't see why you can't get a refund

Tried uninstalling and reinstalling and that didn't help. Why can't I choose to get e refund via the Xbox website? If I go to my account and purchase history, there is no refund option for this title.

I apologize but just a friendly reminder that for refund concerns there is a dedicated team that handles them which is the refund team. There is no direct contact with them, only by submitting a refund request and by replying to their email (refund request confirmation and refund decision).
