Why can't I change my Gamer Tag for free?

I have been using Xbox for nearly 8 years now and I wanted to know why I can't change my GT (Gamer Tag) for free? I am well aware that I can change it within 30 days of the account being made, but I wanted to know why we have to pay. If we have to pay for
the Xbox live gold, then why the GT? It is just a name and because I have had the Xbox for a while now some of the names I have on other accounts are childish and I think they should be changed. Anyway I just think that changing your name for free is better
than paid. It's a bit of a weird thing to do.

Also, this isn't my account I am using my dads account for this post. I'm just a 11 year old writing this. I hope people from Xbox will read this and make some changes to this because some people might want to change their name. I know because I have been
playing on Xbox since I was about four and I know that my decision when I was younger was a bit childish and would look cooler at the age I am now if it was different. I also think other people might like this idea too!

My Gamer Tags don't match! Help!!

I set up my xbox live account on my console and got my gamer tag. When I logged online to the xbox website, I was given a different gamer tag. I can't change my tag without using up my one free name change. Why are they different and how do I correct the
one online so it matches my console gamer tag?

 

Gamer tag changed without my consent

I'm sure something like this had happened before but I'm new to the forum. My gamer tag was changed to done random tag without my knowledge. Does anyone know why and how to correct this without the absurd charge microsoft implements?

 

If you can change your name for free, people would keep changing it over and over, and no one would know who they are. The way it is now, it encourages you to chose a name you'll want to stick with.

 

As well as what was said above, it would be difficult to figure out the ban system, due to IP addresses and all that mumbo-jumbo. Not only that, but it is a great way for Microsoft to make a couple extra bucks on people that wish to change their GTs. In
terms of the price, I do not believe it should be $10, maybe half that.

 

You probably can call support maybe they can do a one time courtesy for being a loyal customer.

Personally I am happy that it's not free to change your gamertag.

Think about it.. someone could abuse the ToS and then change his/her gamertag afterwards.

I much rather pay $15.

 

Pretty much what Zen said, and it also helps Ms track you easier if you've been a naughty badger.
