Why Are Some Older Gamers So Grumpy?

I don't judge people by their age though. I judge them by what they do and say. If a person's only argument is "I'm older so I'm right", then it shows how weak their argument really is!

I'm 46 myself and have met 'grumpy' people of all ages. As a general rule, I tend to (good or bad) reflect the overall tone people have with or around me.

The only thing age (IMO) gains someone is life experience. Don't get me wrong, that's a very valuable learning tool, but in the end it's still just a tool. It has to be used properly
like any other tool. Many people try to throw their age into an argument, or situation, like it's the be all - end all contributing factor that should get them the win. It isn't... and it shouldn't be.

As an "older" gamer (46), I've been playing with mostly the same group of men for nearly 8 years. Ages range between 30-something and nearly 60. We enjoy the camaraderie as much as anything, and our shared experiences enhance the gaming conversations.
It's not that we have anything against younger gamers, but our worldview is simply different. When I was 20, I wouldn't have believed I would have the outlook on life that I do now. Older gamers here will know exactly what I'm talking about.

If gaming together was just about the games, it might be different. But it's not. It's about telling stories of all the ups and downs that life has chucked in front of you over many many years. It's all about the communal aspects of doing something you enjoy
with other people who remember what it was like "way back when".

For the record, our group has seen us part ways with gamers older than us, simply because they were d-bags, and at the same time we once took in a member who was still in high school because he was a pleasant, intelligent kid who respected people he played
with. Everything is a matter of perspective.

 

gaming is all about perspective .. some have it and other don't. age plays a slight part in it but humanity of the person plays most of it.

Coming from an older gamer (37), I think the main reason we get a bit frustrated with younger people is because young people can be quite arrogant and think the know everything. As we are older we can speak from experience. Trust me I do understand why the
young think they know everything. I was that age once and thought I was king of knowledge! Looking back now I realise that I was as green as they come. Trust me when I say that you will one day look back on yourself and the young people around you and think
to yourself, oh my you are so young. Enjoy being god while you can cause one day you will look back just as older gamers do and realise how delusional all you are at that age!

 

@DuFFuL - The fun part about this is 10 years down the road, you will think of your 37 year old self and realize how delusional you were at that age too.

It's human nature I think, that we will always believe that our current self is the best/most experienced that we will be. In reality, we continue to grow/expand ourselves throughout all our lives.
