Why am I not allowed to remove an old phone number?

MS takes security very seriously so they have some security measures in place this is what they call security proofs.

Security proofs can be either an email and/or a phone that you can receive either an email or a text when trying to do something major to an account like:

Changing passwords.

Changing email addresses.

Recovering an account when you forget your password to your account.

Basically if it is used to verify ownership of your account. When trying to do one of these things it will send whichever one you choose it will send a numerical code to it and you would enter in that code and it would verify ownership and allow you to make
the change or allow you to recover your account if you forgot the password.

Now your situation sounds like this is what happened:

If you know the email and password for the account but no longer have access to any of the security proofs that you currently have on the account MS will allow you to change the security proof BUT there is a 30 day waiting period before that security proof
is changed and then you would be able to make the changes after that 30 day period with the new security proof.

Once the 30 day period is put into place the ONLY way to cancel it is to Gain access to the old security proof. If you do not have access or can regain access to it then you would have to wait out the 30 days.

UNLESS you forgot.to keep your contact and security info upto date

Then its your own fault

Your security chexks are there ifor w reason and should always be upto date especially if you gwt phished or the stranger you gameshared with suddenly makes 1000s of dollars of purchases im pretty sure you want to be notified when someone makes purchases
on your account

If you had kept your security proofs upto date just security use other security proof like sms or backup email the allow the change

This preventa anyone from changinf your proofs unlwss you dont care about your money youd want to be notified

Why did my reference number get removed? It's not like it was my personal email address or phone number.

I spent A LOT of time on the phone and chat, so there's probably a ton of good information to be used in troubleshooting this.
