Whole game is now unplayable (Disc Read Failed)

Hello all

So, I have been playing Dark Souls through Games With Gold for a few days now and got up to about level 28

I was leveling up and exploring in the forest (past the crescent door in the Darkroot Garden), and past these mushroom guys is this path that leads to a bright shining door at the end.

As soon as I walked down to the path, a message popped up saying "Disc
read failed", and then it wouldn't let me do anything except for go back to the Xbox Dashboard.

I tried clearing the system cache, redownloading the update and even trying to play without being signed in, but now I can't even get to the title screen without the game completely locking up and the only thing I can do is go to the dashboard.

Heck, even without selecting a storage device where it says "Blah blah blah, not signed in you won't be able to save the game, is this ok?" and I go to click "Ok" and nothing happens. It just sits there frozen.

And whilst it may or may not be related, this game has some of the WORST FPS lag in certain areas, the forest being one of them.

Was wondering if anyone else has had this issue and if there is a fix

Clearly you failed to read the whole "First Person Shooter" and "My mom won't let me play M rated games" sections of the post.

 

Just an update:

I got the game actually working now (can reach the title screen, start new game or load).

But the problem is that it still wont load my saved game, every time I do it says "Disc read failed". So with that being said, the save file is completely unplayable.

 

Do this go buy a disk cleaner and run it in the xbox. My brother bought one and cleaned the xbox and gave it to his friend that has the same problem and it fixed the problem. What happens is the lazer in the cd rom cannot read the disk. I will find out later
today which product he bought and post it if its not against MS stupid tos.

 

Also try this, boil some water, then hold the disc under the water for a full min. then using a dry soft cloth wipe it off. it should run(your dics that is)

I said that I got this game (downloaded) from Games With Gold. There is no disc!

Regardless, I have already got another character which has surpassed my old one.

With that being said, I suggest that everyone stay away from the area of the Darkroot Forest, past the Forest Hunter Covenant area where you can see a second sealed crescent door down a path until the issue is fixed (assuming I am not the only
one experiencing this).

 

Still you can have disc read failed if you have a cd in it then try to play a game off the hdd. Its either that or your hdd going bad. Can you play other games that you downloaded? If so then try redownloading dark souls and clear system cache.

 

Sounds like your game save got corrupted since you've been able to start a new game and progress farther than you had previously with a new save.

Now prepare to die!!!

 

So, just to update this current situation:

I am now on my third character which has surpassed the others so that I can play coop with my friend.

I tried to go back to that area in the Darkroot Forest, the 2nd crescent door, and again it said "Disc Read Failed". Every time I try to go there, the game crashes. Last time, the game saved as the glitch happened which is what made me go into a constant
loop every time I tried to load my character that would be displayed.

Am I the only one that gets the Disc Read Failed bug when someone visits this area?

 

Sounds like there could be a problem with the specific sector of the hard drive that holds the data for this area. I saw where you stated that you re-downloaded the update.

Have you tried deleting and reinstalling the entire game from scratch?

 

Am actually going to do that today, considering I can't progress any further in the game until I get past the forest.

Will let you all know if it is successful or not

 

So after completely uninstalling and reinstalling (after making a safe copy of my save file on a flash drive), and clearing the cache etc, I was finally able to visit the area without it locking up and potentially corrupting the game.

So finally this problem has been solved.

Im having similar problems. I had been playing the game fine, back when i had a gold subscription to xbl.

i deleted entire game & just recently redownloaded & tried to play my old character, but kept getting read disc failed errors, even though its g.o.d. version.

Then even if id try to start a new character the game would just freeze on the load screen, after the initial c.g. sequence.

Deleted everything & am going to try to reinstall it after major cache clears. Its worth noting my 60gb hdd is pretty full, & i zuspect that combined with switching to perma offline mode may be causing the problems.
