Who Wants The Guide Button Back???

Most people that want the guide button back do so because (I think) it was fast. I don't want the guide button back - I think that would be a step backwards - but I do want the UI sped up.

There's plenty MS can do to make the UI more responsive - I feel that a lot of the "spinning circle" is probably down to the X1 getting stuff from the servers. For example, with notifications, the X1 should pre-fetch and cache the notification before informing
you that you have a notification - that way when you decide to look at that notification (which you are likely to want to do) then it can be shown quickly - rather than the X1 servers being queried after the UI request. As a UI developer I'm frustrated that
MS haven't used more "tricks" like that to give us a perceivably faster UI.

Try power cycling the console by holding down the power button for 10 seconds.

Restart the console to see if it fixed the problem after.

 

The thing is with a guide, it wouldn't have to change anything for kinect user's, it would still stay the same for them. It wouldn't mean the "snap" would have to go, everything could stay the same but with the addition of a guide menu for the people that
would want it.

I think some people think that having a guide back would mean other thing's would have to change.....but it doesn't, It's simply about having the best possible experience for everybody with an X1, not just kinect users.

Anyway, what will be will be, I suppose....

 

I personally wouldn't use the guide button because I have a Kinect, but I know of a lot of friends who would kill to have it back.

This isn't an either/or scenario. You could easily have Kinect voice commands AND a mini-dash.

If you didn't want to use the mini-dash you could continue to simply use the voice commands.

Don't want to use voice commands for some reason, you've lost your voice for example or simply don't have Kinect plugged in, you can use the mini-dash.

Surely having the option for both is a step forwards, not back.

 

I wouldn't want it back. I don't really see the point of it on the Xbox One. I would rather the guide button continue to work as a "home" button.

 

A guide option would be awesome currently I just double click the home button and use the new snap menu to do stuff. I have a kinect less Xbox and do that as a work around. Not sure if I can look at my friend list with it though.. Might have a tinker tomorrow
and see if it can be done.

 

The dashboard is setup now so it's not needed. There is no longer five or 6 tabs of content it has been reduced to 3.

Even on the 360 the pin system out weighed the home button feature.

On this note, I'd like to comment that I came to a realization recently. Bringing up the guide on the 360 just felt more like it should be that way, to me. The guide popped up
in the center of the screen with a small dialog box that was quick and easy to navigate. You had quick access to most, if not all, features that I ever needed access to while I was gaming. Meanwhile, your game stayed full screen. This little fact made me feel
as if the game remained my prominent focus and that the activity I needed the guide for was a brief, secondary interruption that was quickly and easily dismissed. To me, this felt natural and appropriate.

The whole Home Screen idea does the opposite for me. I feel pulled from my gaming session and side tracked by whatever other activity needs my temporary focus. A full shift of
focus, as opposed to a temporary distraction to make it short and sweet. Snapping isn't much better (to me). It distorts the screen and takes away the natural feeling of immersion in the game in that aspect. Not that I have anything against using the snap
feature. I use it, just as minimally as possible.

Maybe if they gave us the ability to set transparency of the snap pane and have it overlap (as an option for those who want it) might make it seem less intrusive, IDK.

 

@Blue Illusion. You just summed up perfectly how I feel about it. I suppose I found it hard to describe before, but now I don't have to...... Thumbs up.

 

Any you guys that don't like to go to the homemto check messages have a smartphone or tablet with smartglass. I've used my phone quite a few times while in game to respond to a message with smartglass. Love smartglass on x1.

 

@Merlin, Don't take it wrong, but that solves nothing for me. In fact, it makes things worse in the context I was pointing out. Using a phone with smartglass means I put down my controller, pick up my phone, adjust my eyes from a 46" easy to see/read (yeah,
I'm a older gamer) screen to one that is a few inches at best and use a completely different (smaller) UI.

All in all, I feel less pulled from my game by using the X1s UI and fumbling through the Home Screen/snapping.

Just sayin...

 

I don't have to pop anything up on my screen. If I do not want to go to my pins or use my voice I just pull out my smart glass and the task becomes even easier.
