Thanks for coming to the forums. Sorry for the issue with your headset. When you are connecting the headset, are you connecting through the controller, or directly to the console? If you are connecting it to the console directly it will not work this way.
The Xbox consoles do not support USB mic, or HDMI mic. Here is a guide to connect

While you can use an external microphone like the Seiren Elite in general, I'm unsure if you can use both a headset and an external at the same time. It probably is possible so long as you know how to set it up. The Xbox Accessories page should help you
with what you need but, you probably don't need an adapter so long as the external is connected via usb and the headset is to the controller. The only instance I would think you'd need an adapter was if your headset wasn't the standard 3.5mm I think... or
if your external mic wasn't usb.
