Where has the link gone for FREE games with Xbox Live membership?

Once it is gone, it's gone. Only by creating a new Gamertag on the console you will get that free trial question again.

But consider this:

A Live Gold membership prepaid card can be had for about US$ 30-40 depending on where you buy it, and what special sales they have (Amazon often has those).

This means, that one month will only cost you $US 2.50.

So is it really worth creating a new account or worrying about a free month, if you can get a membership for 2.50 a month?

Most Starbucks coffees cost more than a month like that ;-)

So I followed the steps you posted above, and I cleared the system Cache but I'm still having the same problem. Im unable to play online, and I'm still getting the same error message. And under account management where it says "Your Memberships" My membership
an hour ago said "12 month prepaid card" but that's gone and all it says is "xbox live free"

Yes it is normal.

Xbox Live has two types of memberships. The free membership, previously called
Xbox Silver, has only limited functionality. The free service does not allow for
online multiplayer gameplay. The paid membership,
Xbox Gold, grants gamers multiplayer access and also provides one or two free games a month.

Have you gone through the process to sign up to Xbox LIVE? If you choose Free Membership, you will be given the One Free Month of Xbox LIVE Gold. Is this your first time using Xbox LIVE sign up? There is a limit to how many gamertags are eligable for the
one month free.

But like I said above, if you have been through the sign up to Xbox LIVE process and there is no text anywhere stating you have a 1 Month Free Gold Membership, then you may be out of luck.
