where do you download 4k assets using xbox one x

i have games that say they are 4k enhanced titles and a 4k tv but i dont know if my xbox automatically updates these titles or gives me the option to download them, but i have had no updates pending for anything since i got my xbox
one x i have my console setup to keep my console updated but not my games so that i can pick what games i want to update manually. ive moved all my settings and games to my external hard drive from my base xbox one but i didnt do the download 4k assets before
i backed everything up and transferred to my external hard drive because I didnt enough space on my hard drive for potentially 100 gb per 4k game i already own, any suggestions?

What's with the size of updates?

Have you got the download 4K content checked? If so then untick it and it won’t download the One X assets.

Xbox One X Noob questions

install the game as is. The system detects you have an X and should install the patch with the download. Forza Horizon 3 doesnt have 4K textures, it is already using the highest resolution assets from the PC version... meaning the original Xbox One is using the exact textures you see on a PC.

Games that do have 4K assets to download should do so on their own.

From Microsoft: “If you jumped straight into the Xbox One X without realizing you needed to download 4K game content, don’t worry – you can do it now! There’s no need to dive into any settings, simply boot up your Enhanced game by putting in the Blu-ray disc or loading up the digital game, and you will be prompted to download the 4K game content.”

If you're plugging into an Xbox One X, the games may well be pulling in 4K assets, if they are One X enhanced titles. On Xbox One S, there is a setting to

enable the download of 4K assets if you intend on moving the drive between consoles.

Do you have the download 4k assets option switched on?

It's in the Backup&Transfer options

Apparently the main function of shrink option is to be able to delete all the 4k assets to save hard drive space. This is especially useful on the OG xbox One and the Xbox One S as they can't actually use the 4k assets

Be aware that that there are one or two ways Xbox One enhanced games work when it comes to 4K. Some games are simply optimised to run in 4K resolution and nothing else is added to the game code. The textures remain the same as the standard Xbox, but everything
looks sharper and crisp because the game is running natively at 3840x2160.

For example Assassins Creed Origins and Assassins Creed Odyssey run in 4K with HDR, but have no additional 4K assets. Wolfenstein The New Colossus has no 4K assets either, just a resolution bump.

I don't think Shadow of the Tomb Raider has 4K assets. The Division doesn't have 4K assets either, as far as I'm aware. However, it does need the latest patch to run in 4K. If you ran the Division in offline mode straight after the disc install on an
Xbox One X, it will play as if it were running on a standard Xbox One.

I don't think RDR2 has any 4K assets, the game simply runs in 4K on the One X console. The Patch does not contain any additional texture data for the One X platform.
