When sharing an Xbox, I can no longer own the new free Xbox gold games.

I share my xbox account with my brother. The new update (october 2018) has removed the option to own the free xbox live game if he owns it first. The sharing option on the game menu is a nice addition, but removing the option for me to own the game (for
free) as well and not just him is bad, because what happens when we stop sharing.

When you purchase it for free it's your's to keep as long as you have a gold membership active which means you can dip in and out of gold if you want to.

I am new to Xbox One games with gold and just had a quick question...

I am a gold member, if I let my gold account run out, I understand I can't play this game any longer (like PSN) however, will the game become playable again if I re subscribe, or do you lose it if you let your membership lapse? (I mean when the game is no longer on Games with gold)

Sorry to hear it. With the games with gold program you can only play the Xbox One gold titles so long as you have a gold membership. If you stop sharing and lose access to gold you lose access to the games anyway. I would recommend getting a gold membership
for your account to ensure you continue getting both the Xbox One and Xbox 360 titles as they are added.

 

Sorry, I shoud clarify, we both have gold memberships, so I do know I need a gold membership to get it for free. There used to be an option to get or install a game which I thought was a fix to the problem. But now with the update I can't get the free game
anymore as the option disapears for me to own it (for free) once he owns it first.

 

As stated if you stopped sharing you would no longer have access to any of those games anyway as the license is owned by your brother. Sadly gold doesnt support sharing free games.

Thats exactly the problem! Once we stop sharing I dont have access which is why I want to own the game for free as well and not just him. But i can't do that becuase the own the game for free option disapears and is replaced with an install the game instead.
Ive checked my account so I know i dont actually already own it and he does.

Thanks for clarifying. When you have a game installed on the console you won't see the option to purchase it from the Xbox store. In that case you would need to head to the website to add the game to your account as stated by ForzaDrift Girl.
