  2. Bran, the reason you haven't seen very much of it is because previous platforms haven't been as friendly to new/indie developers as they are now. The doors have swung open and everything's coming out of the woodwork. You may not like some of what comes through
that door, but you're just going to have to deal with it, because they are here now. Enjoy your new neighbors. When Push Comes to Shovel ;)

I wouldn't really call it a fad, I'd just call it another genre. I don't think it's existence is hindering other genres. It's an indie game. Realistic graphics are the future but sometimes I just like something basic and fun. That's what I'm looking forward
to from Shovel Knight. I've only heard awesome things about it from people who've played on other platforms.

Rand very, I was excluding handhelds as I'm on about home consoles.

We've already had realistic graphics in video games. If you were gaming in the early 90's you got to experience it first hand with FMV (full motion video) in games. So realistic graphics will actually be "retro" ;p

I just have to say that maybe we're seeing more of these games now because of ID@Xbox? As I understand there was no way to self publish on the 360 so we just weren't seeing them.

I know there was the indie marketplace, but that wasn't available in my region so why push these games to the masses, when the masses can't actually access them. Just a thought, maybe we are going through a fad, who knows.

The reason you're seeing these games is because they have been released on another platform ( the vast majority on the PC but a few handhelds) and sold extremely well.

Shovel Knight was released almost a year ago on the PC and is widely considered one of the best games ever made in the genre.

The "other guy" is grabbing up as many of the top tier indie games as they can and they are being met with open arms. but the Xbox crowd doesn't seem to be nearly as enthusiastic about them. Don't knock'em till you try them, you may be surprised.

  10. To be honest, I've never really knocked them and couldn't really care because I still get to play what I want and thanks to the ID@Xbox I will eventually get to play Oddworld New and Tasty so it's really the best of all worlds!

Everyone is entitled to their opinion of course but I spent my money willingly on this game and so far what I have played is great When Push Comes to Shovel :)

  12. I agree with bowski - Hollified Ninja is simply ignorant; he probably hasn't even played it yet.

As for me? I've purchased it with XBL credit from previous purchases (which means I basically got it for free) and have played my way through the entire 1st level, explored the village, fought the 1st boss and even met the Trouple King, who is awesome. As
a matter of fact, the whole game is awesome. The platforming is spot on - not too easy or too hard, the music is wonderful to listen to, the story is really good, the puns are far better than anything I could ever come up with, the stages unique from each
other and quite original, and the amount of treasure and secrets you can find is staggering.

Yes, it plays a lot like the older games, but that's not a bad thing. As others have said, it's easily among the best, likely because it borrows from the best. It has platforming like Megaman, jumping like from Ducktales, a world-map like from Mario Bros.,
relics like from Castlevania, and bosses like from Metroid.

If you like old-school games or platformers, then you WILL love this game.

If you're not into old-school games, it's still probably worth giving it a try for how good it is. The current price as of this message is $15. When Push Comes to Shovel ;)

There's an achievement for completing the game without dying and one for finishing the game in an hour and 30min. I failed the former within like 1min of gameplay lol

Whilst I can understand people complaining about the lack of a particular type of content they might enjoy, moaning about content that no one is forcing you to play, and that quite a number of people seem to enjoy seems both pointless and trollish, I try
to judge any game by its game play first before any consideration as to whether its "game type A or B", or "Next Gen", "this Gen", "Last Gen" - Simplistically people play to enjoy themselves, so if someone is enjoying content, no matter what it is, that's
great and the fact someone else wants to moan about others having fun, seems to point to a character flaw IMHO.

For my part, one of my favourite games of all time that still gets pulled out for local multi-player and buckets of laughs is Atomic Bomberman and most Bomberman type clones. An ultimate example of Game play over graphics
