When Push Comes to Shovel

I agree with Azrael, it's a good game. I've owned it on the PC for almost a year and picked it up Tues for the PS4.

This game pays tribute to the NES 2D platformers of the 80's and 90's and does it better than any of them. It's difficult but not controller throwing difficult. Funny, responsive controls, it's does everything well.

It reminds me of the 90's.....

 

I re-watched the trailer with my family this evening, and realized that it does share a lot in common with older games - It has the overlay map of Super Mario Bros. 3, The hop from Ducktales, plays like Megaman and Castelvania, and numerous others. That
is pretty cool. Also, I already knew this game was out elsewhere, so I wanted to see what people's reactions would be about it if they had already played it. Most of the time, when I post about a game like this, most people say it's crap because of it's retro
style or something along those lines - I could tell that that would not be the case with this game, regardless of what some people might say.

 

I bought this for OS X, but depending on the price I'll dig it again.

 

This is set to drop tomorrow I believe. I'm pretty sure I'm going to pick it up. I love old school side scrollers.

 

I'll probably pick it up too. It looks like it'll win Indie awards in spades.

 

Good game or not I can't wait til this retro fad dies off.

 

I'm not sure how something can be called a "retro fade" that's existed for about 30 yrs and has never gone away.

These types of games are new to the Xbox but have always been here. These type of games at least add some variety to what would otherwise be a recycled library of FPS's or the new go to genre......the open world game with criminals, orcs or zombies.

 

I agree with Randver - all it is is another sub-genre. It may wax and wane like the moon over a graveyard, but it'll never be completely buried...

 

It has gone away. Don't know where you've been but I don't remember this many 8 bit games coming out on any system since the 90's. Here are the systems that haven't had as many retro fad 8 bit games as this gen. Dreamcast, Saturn, PS2 and PS3, Xbox, Xbox
360, Gamecube, Atari Jaguar. There haven't been this many games like this since the SNES and Genesis days.

They have definitely made a resurgence this gen. They most certainly are a fad.

 

Just because they haven't gone completely away doesn't mean they aren't a fad. The VW bug was always around since the 70's but it became really popular again years back. It was a fad because it died down again. I hardly ever see them now.

There are lots of things that become popular again years after they weren't in the limelight but they always die back down. Same will happen to these types of games. They won't die off by they won't be a fad either. I can't wait til that time comes.

PS2 and PS3 had a bunch, PSP, DS and the PC all had them too. Look at all the games developed with RPGmaker in the early 2000's and beyond. The DS had/has probably more pixel/sprite than anything else.

8 bit, 16 bit.....I'm not counting pixels but the 2D pixel/sprite based games have been alive and well since they first started. It's easier to market/advertise/port games today so I think it's a matter of not having to look as hard to find them as it was
the past.

I guess it depends on where the line is drawn as "acceptable" in regards to the character models. Is Disgaea ( and a bunch of turned based JRPGS) in the retro fade category?
