Whelp.

So I just got a prepaid code for ten dollars from gamestop to use for my microsoft account, foolishly thinking that it would be as simple as to just do that and purchase a month of live that way, instead of using a card, since mine recently expired, and
cash was about the only thing I had. So now I have 14 dollars in my Microsoft account, and can't play online. Yet paypal and all of the other methods are still just fine. Well done Microsoft.

You should have bought a 1 month pre-paid Gold card if that's what you wanted. Those gift cards are designed for purchasing games and DLC.

If you want pay as you go you can forgo the convenience of subscriptions by buying a prepaid membership cards you probably miss the discounts subscribers get on occasion like 1 dollar a month deals or dlc
