What's your favorite & least favorite game genre of all time?

My favorite genres are Shooters, RPGs, and Action Adventure games. My least favorites are JRPGs (I personally can't stand these games), Racing (I find them fun for a week and then immediately get bored of them), and Sports games.

What game genres do you love & hate?

    :)

What Games do you Hate of your Favorite Genre?

What are some of your favorite genres you enjoy... and pretty much every game of that type you tend to gravitate toward... ?? --But yet, there is always that one game or series you hate. I was wondering what everyone's favorite game genres were and their
biggest gripes of their least favorite franchises of the respected genres.

For me, one of my favorite genres is the sandbox style action/adventure genre. I tend to eat up every sandbox game out there. But coincidently, I very much dislike the GTA series. Rockstar has pigeon-holed that series and never bothered to upgrade the lousy
freeroam. Game after game. With the exception of LA Noire, all of their sandbox games are remarkably similar, with the GTA series being the most boring and dull... hookers aside. (imo).

What is your favourite game genre?

Thanks for all the replies it will help me greatly. As for me, I think my favorite genre is the action adventure genre with The Legend of Zelda series being my favorite video game series of all time. However, I do love pretty much all genres except sport
games and some puzzle games. What's your favorite & least favorite game genre of all time? ;)

  4. What's your favorite & least favorite game genre of all time?

I go through phases. One year it's action/shooters, next it's single player rpgs. Currently, it's single player rpg's. All my old rainbow buddies are expecting me to be playing it when it comes out but I'm not sure I will. I just don't have the time
to devote to be the level I made it to before, and I certainly don't want to be a noob. My gt has to be at the top, not the bottom. Sticking to my SP's.

  7. The genre I consistently dislike is the first person shooter, any game which uses the first person view to be honest.

I just don't grasp how something which lacks peripheral vision, spacial awareness, and depth perception can be considered to be more immersive.

Of course there are first person games I like but as a general rule I try to avoid them.

I pretty much enjoy all genres. My favorite is RPG's such as Dragon Age. Least favorite would have to be the music simulators like Guitar Hero and Rock Band.

@Vaynel~ How can you not grasp it? It's more immersive to most people than hovering mid-air behind a dude is, or over a dude's a shoulder, flying behind a car, floating over a battlefield, behind a plane, having fingers represented by lights on a grid, controlling
    falling blocks... lol

Even if you technically don't have a body and you can turn on a dime... it is more immersive because there's nothing on the screen to represent you. You are the screen, and stuff comes directly at you. =|

That being said, I do prefer third-person games, because of the periphery and FOV. I play the Fallouts mostly in third-person. But some of the best game experiences I've had have been first-person. =)

I don't have a favourite genre though. I like action/adventure games I think. S'not even a genre really, industry dumps everything into it. But yeah, I'll play anything pretty much. I can't say if I don't like sports games because the last one I played was
forever ago. I do know I haven't seen one that makes me want to play one. I love the UFC irl and never miss a show [cannot wait for UFC 189!] but the game... meh. No interest. At all. If I gave it a chance I might like it.

    Don't wanna... nyah.

Mobile/social network games made for sheeple and built around micro-transactions wins worst "genre" by a country mile. {XD

  11. I don't claim third person is any more realistic but it goes someway to replicating the senses we use each day far more than first person.

Peripheral vision and spacial awareness are taken care of because you have a wider view of the environment and depth perception because you can judge your characters height against objects in the world.

I can't grasp why people like first person because I find it so very limiting.

I find it limiting after playing third-person games for a stretch, but it takes one, maybe two levels before I'm used to it. If it isn't total trash it should be reasonably well designed. You should know in no time flat what objects at what height you can
duck under, run on, jump over, lean around etc.

Then you learn what your enemies can do in the world. You stop missing senses your in-game entity doesn't have. Can't smell crap in games but something tells me Super Mutants stink a bit. They could do a HUD element to replicate smell... but is it really
so debilitating, not being able to smell?

I'd even say in some third-person games you have too much awareness, and can see too much. 3PS cover-based stuff you can see way more than the guy who is supposed to be you, ducked behind that concrete wall with his head up his butt. It works, but if a nade
is being thrown you see it before it leaves the guy's hand. In a FPS you probably more realistically see it bounce next to you and you have no idea who threw it.

I can grasp why people like first-person. I think you can too, lol. I like a ton of them. I'm a fan of pretty much the entire id Software FPS stable. Valve's Portal games. Splash Damage's team-based battlegrounds. BioShock left a mark. Thief 2 stuck with
me. QIIIA introduced me to the joys of the twitch shooters... that consoles just can't do.

Any genre I switch back and forth with, sometimes games in the same genre with different controls... I find something limiting for a while. There's a period of adjustment. Just takes a level or two and once the rules of the world are set you can navigate
as well you can go from one room in your house to the other with the lights out, and white noise blasting you or something. You're comfortable with the floor space, furniture, and layout, you're all set with no problems -- missing a few senses. {=D

  13. What's your favorite & least favorite game genre of all time?

Perhaps my biggest irritation for first person games is melee, it just don't work.

Because of the aforementioned lack of depth perception you can't accurately judge how far away the enemy is, leading to all too often either waving your weapon and missing or having to get so close you can tell what they had for breakfast.

I love FPS/TPS and GTA-like open-world games. Can't see myself playing RPGs or sports games because of complexity with them.

@Vaynel I would have that "melee" problem with Black Ops II more than other shooters.

  15. Could I recommend Dragon Age: Origins to you as a gateway RPG gamerXpress?

Stick it on the easiest difficulty setting and you can pretty much walk through the combat sections, you need only pay lip service to weapons and armour, and you get a great story to boot. Though get a guide for The Fade section as it is perhaps the most
tedious thing I've ever played through.

It will honestly be as complex as you want it to be.
