Whats more important to you?

Whats more important to you? Should a game be Epic in scope with a serious engaging story, multiple endings and plotlines, countless hours of gameplay and depth? Or simply be fun to play? The kind of game you play over and over for no other reason other
than fun factor. I like both kinds of games but the more I think about it the Epic games seem more like interactive experinces than games anymore. This isnt to say they arent great. They are. And maybe its just because I'm getting older but I'm beginning to
feel the simple games that you can play over and over hold more value to me. I'll play the Epics once maybe twice through and then never touch them again. Where do you guys stand?

Some features are more important to others. The Xbox One will do loads of things that some people find more important than others, and we shouldn't judge. Nor should we judge what included features are more important.

Okay, I definitely understand YOUR analogy too. I was kind of confused by my own analogy Teehee.

 

I prefer long and engaging stories. Just like how I can reread a favourite book, I can reply a favourite game over and over. I've just started a new Dragon Age: Origins run despite having played it too many times to count.

The simple games are fun but I lose interest quite quickly as they end up too repetitive.

 

That's true about being like a good book. I loved the story in KOTOR. Both of them. But on the flip side I never played skyrim for the simple fact that when it came out I had not yet completed oblivion. I put what seems to me an unbelievable amount of hours
into oblivion and still have not finished it. But I guess the upside to that is when I finally do get around to skyrim it'll be dirt cheap. Or better yet GwG. Is there a point when a story can be too long if it doesnt hold your attention? Again it may just
be my current lifestyle is getting in the way of my gaming habits. I'm 37 with a almost 3 year old girl so I don't get to read many books anymore unless its a Disney princess story. Lol

 

Skyrim isn't a game I enjoy, or any of the Elder Scrolls titles to be honest. Don't get me wrong I can appreciate them on a technical level but there simply isn't the narrative drive in them to maintain my interest.

 

That may actually be the reason I never finished oblivion. I'm pretty sure I was near the end. Maybe even the final boss. But once the battle began I was just getting slaughtered. I thought maybe my characte4 just wasn't leveled up enough as I just followed
the main story and hardly touched the side quests. And with the dang auto save I couldn't go back and do any of the side quests cause the final battle had al4eady started. I had to create a whole le another character and start over. Spent about 16 hours on
that battle before I finally gave up and started over.

 

"fun" is a big aspect of gaming, i mean why would you keep playing a game that wasn't fun? but as is the case with graphics over gameplay, you see the epic scope of a game long before you get to play it, articles will tell you how big and expansive the game
is and how many branching story-lines there are before saying "also the game is really fun". so fun is more important while playing, but epic is what buys the game.

of course this is only in regards to rpgs and open world games that actually have an "epic" feel to them, and i'm mostly referring to the witcher 3 since it's the next game with a literal epic feel on the horizon...

 

I prefer games to be fun.

Games like Mass Effect were big with lots of storylines but it was really boring. I thought Fallout 3 was boring. So was GTA IV.

I loved The Witcher 2 though as well as Skyrim.

 

I prefer epic games with great story's over "fun" games. Some games like bioshock are more story than game but it's one on my favorites. I like fun games too like mine craft and pvz gw. Some games have the best of both worlds like the dead space trilogy,
all the halos,the evil within, some of the cods ,and alien isolation. Come to mind.

 

For me its very important that it separates itself from a movie. A good story is nothing without gameplay.

 

I prefer games 2B epic in scope with a serious and engaging story line, multiple endings and plot are ok with me. I just like countless weeks or even months of single, or if I wish, mp game play and depth.

In other words I am more of a campaign player than anything else.

Yet most games being developed these day's don't cater to gamers like me. Oh well. I have a house full of 'Old School' consoles/games that I have yet to play to help fill the void.

 

Finding the right balance in a game is incredibly important but very hard to find.

The Batman Arkham games for example are all good but for me only the first was great. Asylum gave you room to explore and experience being Batman, but knew when to tug on the leash so that the story never lost its importance.

Arkham City and Origins are good but they lost that. Sometimes less is more.

 

I like both. Sometimes I want to be immersed in a world with a great story, then there's times where I just want to load up a game and jump into some quick and fun action.

I disagree that Batman Arkham City lost its way compared to Arkham Asylum. City captured the essence of Gotham and made it a character. It improved the combat, stealth, and Batman's movement [ability to glide], and it added a bunch of new mechanics - it
managed to balance a relative horde of cast members while maintaining a narrative, and also... Catwoman, one of the most polished female characters to control in any vidya gayme evar!

... it deserved its GOTYs, BAFTAs and it [and Origins to some extent] will be the mould Arkham Knight uses, while having volume 11 additions applied to it, IMHO.

I like epic games that engage me emotionally and make me care, but they also have to have solid and engaging gameplay, I
like Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, Dead Space, Batman: Arkham, Red Dead Redemption, Max Payne, Fallout.

Some games that perhaps aren't quite as polished or well reviewed I'll play because just a tiny aspect of them has caught my interest. An art style or a character. Sometimes... I just want to sit down for an hour and play the equivalent of Pong.
So a cutesy puzzler or a quirky platformer will do. Sometimes any game is better than the mind-numbing TV some people watch on my shores. The thirty-year-long soaps... I... I can't take even two minutes
of that stuff. {XD
