What type of monitor should I get for the Xbox Series X?

    Hi there,

I'm currently using a 24 inch, 1080p, 75hz monitor (Asus VG245H) for gaming on my Xbox Series X but I want to upgrade to be able to game at 120fps.

I play FPS games (mainly Halo Infinite which is one of the reasons for the upgrade) and also single player games (Resident Evil series, Control, Dark Souls, Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order, to name a few examples). I've done some research online and I know I want either 24 or 27 inch, at least 144hz with very low response time but am unsure which resolution to choose from. Do I upgrade to 1440 or 4k or stick with 1080?

If I go with 4k then I'm getting the best image possible on my Xbox and can utilise hdr (which only works at 4k on XSX) which is great for single player games. However many games I want to play at 120fps will have to downscale the resolution to 1440 or 1080 and I heard the image quality doesn't look as good downscaled as it does on their native resolutions.

The 1440 seems like a good middle ground as many games that play at 120 can do so at this resolution (I know halo infinite does). However there are still a few that don't and will have to downscale to 1080 and again the image quality suffers.

I've been leaning towards a 27 inch 1440 display but have been confused by some of what I've read online. I'm far from an expert on this stuff. I have seen posts online of people saying to just get 4k because the Xbox Series X upscales everything to 4k anyway before downscaling to whatever resolution your monitor outputs but I'm not sure if thats true. I've read that 4k downscaled to 1080 is decent but 4k downscaled to 1440 not so much.

If I have a 1440 monitor and I'm playing a game like resident evil 2 remake for example (which can run at 4k 120fps) will the XSX output native1440? Or downscaled 1440?

Sorry for the long rant. I know I wasn't very direct with my questions but any help with clearing up some of these questions and deciding what monitor to go with would be greatly appreciated

    :)

What type of monitor should I get for the Xbox Series X?

    Hello Rellotron,

    Greetings!

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

Choosing the right monitor for your Xbox Series X can significantly enhance your gaming experience. Let’s break down the options based on your requirements:

    1. Resolution:
      • 1080p: Your current monitor’s resolution. While it’s decent, upgrading to a higher resolution will provide better visual quality.
      • 1440p (QHD): A great middle ground. Many games support 120fps at this resolution, including Halo Infinite. It strikes a balance between performance and image quality.
      • 4K (UHD): Offers the highest image quality, especially for single-player games with HDR. However, some games may downscale to 1440p or 1080p for higher frame rates.
    2. Refresh Rate:
      • Aim for at least 144Hz for smoother gameplay. Higher refresh rates provide better motion clarity.
      • If you’re considering 4K, look for monitors with 120Hz support.
    3. Response Time:
      • Opt for a monitor with a fast response time (ideally 1ms) to minimize motion blur during fast-paced games.
    4. HDR:
      • If you want to experience HDR, even on a 1440p monitor, set your Xbox Series X to 4K resolution. Note that not all 1440p monitors support HDR.
    5. Monitor Size:
      • 27-inch is a popular size for gaming. It strikes a balance between screen real estate and immersion.
      • 24-inch is more compact but still suitable for gaming.
    6. Downscaling:
      • Xbox Series X does upscale to 4K before downscaling to your monitor’s native resolution. Downscaled 4K to 1440p should still look good.

Ultimately, the choice depends on your priorities: image quality, performance, or a balance of both. Consider your budget and preferences, and enjoy your upgraded gaming setup!

I hope this helps! Let us know if you have further questions and we are more than happy to help.

Does the series x support 1440p 144/155 refresh rate?

The Xbox Series X will do 120Hz but no more, regardless of resolution or monitor.

I would check to see if other Xbox Series X owners have confirmed to achieve 1440p120Hz on those monitors before purchasing.

Maybe a google of "xbox series x 1440p 120hz ___________ " and insert the monitor model to see if people have posted about their monitor and Series X working.

    Series X problems please help.

    Update:

    1) Disk drive works, turns out i was putting the cd in with the top facing to the right (same way i put it in my xbox one s) and the correct way for the series x is pointing left. Should have noticed it earlier but i was silly :p

    2) As for the monitor, no idea what caused it but i'll stay on the weaker monitor since that one isnt crashing with the series x plugs in.

If I buy hogwarts Xbox one version and I get an xbox series will I be able to play my xbox one version in my xbox x/s

    Hi Roxy!

Your Xbox One version of Hogwarts Legacy will surely work on Xbox Series X/S version. I think it would still look better depending on the size and type of your monitor or display. The Xbox One version also supports HDR10 but there's no 4K in it like the Series X/S version.
