    Hi

Has anyone else had this issue? We bought a Fortnite gift card for our son, but he's already got Fortnite. When you type in the redeem code, it just says:

Which isn't terribly helpful. I have gone back to the retailer. They said speak to Microsoft. I called Xbox. They said speak to the retailer... Has anyone managed to solve this before we get lost in a world of bureaucracy?

    Hope so!

    Thanks

You basically own 2 copies of Fortnite now unless you can sell the other code. It's not a bureaucracy issue really, the retailer sold you a code in good faith and once it's scratched off they can't return it and it's not a Microsoft problem because they
didn't sell you the code so they didn't stick you with two copies of the game.

I'd see if any of your sons friends might not already have the game, but honestly, good luck with that. Sorry.

The issue is that you purchased the product through a retail store they were the ones to get the money for the game and any returns would have to be done through the retail store. If you had made the purchase directly through MS then they may have been able
to do something about it. At this point it would be completely up to the retail store that you made the purchase at as to whether they would do a return of the product for you.

    I'll give you an example:

Say you went to WalMart and purchased a new TV and realized that your significant other already bought the same TV. You would not go to the manufacturer of the TV to get your refund you would take it back to where you purchased it from.

Thanks for your response. I should have a right of return, as with any other gift, right? Surely that's totally normal and expected? I can't be the only person to have stumbled into this loophole. Feels a bit kafkaesque :)

    Thanks

Unfortunately with gift cards, that's pretty standard with any type of gift card and most retailers. Once the code has been revealed they can no longer sell it and, as already stated, they have no way of knowing whether or not it was used.

    Hi

    Thanks for replying.

If I'd bought two tvs, I'd be allowed to return one... In this instance, the store is refusing to refund, as I might have used the code (the "TV" is digital and largely invisible and they can't see if it's in my house or not), and microsoft is refusing to
refund the code because they didn't sell it (although it is their product, and they can see that I haven't used the code - to your metaphor, they can see I have two tvs, and can't use one of them). In the UK, "hard luck, loser" is not part of our statutory
rights as consumers. We get a right of return. I just want to work out who I can return this to. Microsoft will get this money. That's how retail works, right? Or the retailer has already paid Microsoft for the digital goods... so Microsoft has the money.

Thanks for your reply and help so far. I can't be the only one to have done this, and there must be a sensible answer. This can't just be a loop hole where my money disappears, right?

    Thanks!

    N

Anything bought through a third party has to be handled through the third party. The game isn't made by Microsoft. They just happen to also sell it. You need to go to the people that sold it to you.
