What makes next-gen actually next-gen?

The Xbox one, PS4, the latest generation of gaming computer, and maybe Wii U is the now gen, but what makes a next- generation gaming system? Is it better graphics? Is it better processing power? I will be excluding games because that's another topic.
What makes a revolutionary gaming system? What can be improved and revolutionized?

If anyone was to show a next gen game it would have been Microsoft/Sony showing there own games first.

Just another example of how truly amazing Rockstar are. Tell you what though. Can't wait to see what they do actually make on next gen.

Not a rant. And uhh, Bluetooth IS next gen. Just because m$ doesn't support it doesn't make it not next Gen. Heck, tell me, what gen. is Blueray?

 

While Frist of all Next gen graphics are 4 years old compare to PC. But Next gen to me is More out of a console more thing I can do than Power like is said power=PC .

 

Graphics, Animations, physics, power to take advantage of engine power to produce things such as more powerful and smarter AI, More enemies on screen, more natural environments, higher resolution and frame rate.

The next generation provides a leap in all of these departments. We've seen a few games utilize the advantages of next generation already(basically next gen exclusives). I can't wait to see what the games are like next year at this time once this technology
has become more of the norm and last gen has faded away. I can't wait to see some of the more well known and established franchises make a true next generation leap. I want to see the next generation of sports games. The ones at launch looked pretty good(especially
NBA 2K14) but I want to see what the new tech can really do to push Madden, Fifa, NHL, and NBA.

More than anything, I simply cannot wait to see how certain developers push their next games. Naughty Dog really pushed their games on the Playstation 3. It's hard to believe they are last gen. Seriously thinking about Uncharted 4 is making my mouth water.
Naughty Dog always knew how to bring fantastic animations and beautiful graphics together.

 

I agree with Ztrooper16, consoles are still years behind the PC. "Next gen" is a marketing tool to get people to buy new consoles, they start throwing around terms like "cloud computing" "DX12" and people think "wow this is the future". The reality of it
is there is nothing ground breaking about it.

If you owned a 360 and now have game DVR, somewhat better graphics, multi tasking, etc you're impressed and it lives up to the hype. The other side of the community (PC gamers) are waiting for this gens Gears of War quality exclusives so they can clear the
spider webs off their "next gen" console and justify their purchase.

 

Xbox one is the 8th generation of consoles,it's the next generation from the previous one....

Marketing ? This is the way,the industry call it.

New system,better hardware,features,ect....

PC doesn't count, they release a new next gen system every 2 months.Must be the 3000 generation,so far.....

 

It's next generation consoles, and that's it. Next generation gaming as a whole IMO will be widespread use of VR shortly followed by augmented reality.

 

Next gen = An improvement from previous gen.

 

Being after last gen is what makes next Gen.

 

next gen is just basically Next Generation... meaning a new system with totally new ideas and features from the previous one... usually by a step up in hardware and software...

People seem to take Nex Gen too seriously.. expecting "the future" but what it comes down to is new stuff available to the masses...

Now on the other hand.. if you compare both consoles... what has XB1 done internally of the components with the X1 different from the 360 as opposed of the PS3>PS4? Seems to be A LOT more than just faster memory w/ better graphics..

 

I define "next-gen" as game developers having the ability to do more in the game environment to deliver new or better experiences.

 

Next gen for me is having better hardware and features, which allows developers to make bigger games with better standards than last gen. Allowing them to explore and do things they couldn't do on last gen hardware.

 

I figured it was pretty much self explanatory.

 

Next generation. It's simple. The family tree is Xbox, Xbox 360, and the Xbox One. How is this a difficult concept?
