What is UPnP and what does it mean for the Xbox console?

Hey there!

I'm looking to understand why this feature is so important. I have googled some here and there but I'd also like some input from Xbox too. I am not a networking guru so I'm hoping that maybe an example could be provided along with the answer.

Also, I have another question. If a router doesn't have UPnP does that mean that port forwarding or dmz is out of the question? why?

Haha, I was thinking that too.

MS haven't even announced DirectX 12 officially yet. We don't know what new stuff it brings to the table. We don't know what improvements will be made to existing APIs. We don't know how any of those things will affect Xbox One game development and to what
extent.

On March 20th we'll have some answers, but anyone that's writing off DirectX as a "gimmick" obviously has no idea what it is.

 

Hi Im here to help you. UPnP stands for Universal plug and play is recomended for xbox 360 users. Also most routers have buggy filmware which prevents UPnP so many use port forwardind instead. Also its is usally automaticaly enabled on you router but it
don't mean you can't use port forwarding. I looked and most people turn UPnP off and have no issuses. Im happy to help. = )

TLDR is it requried for Xbox Live? No, does it prevent port forwarding? No

 

Alright, both of your answers are very good. Now to make sure I am on the same page, UPnP is a feature on most routers that allow devices to discover other devices on the same network.

Here's what is confusing to me, why is it that refreshing/restarting/disabling/enabling UPnP assist with a Nat issue?

possitive impact to an endpoints mapped behaviour. By doing so, it'll clear the cached mapped table.
