what is the maximum bandwith for usb external drives on the Series X?

Should be noted that usb has to goto the usb host controller then the pic bus then the bus master then the south Bridge controller then north bridge

    Then cpunand gpu and ram

The series x and ps5 uses nvme m.2 which avoids that issue by saying on the pic bus and has direct access to the north bridge

Its like having ram you are limited to the pci bus itself

    Rather then the usb host

You will never beat a nvme in raw performance especially with the new compression. Chip even with an ssd drive because you will always have a bottle neck of the bus master which controls your io functions

what is the maximum bandwith for usb external drives on the Series X?

The Series X uses USB 3.1 Gen1 ports with a maximum bandwidth of 5 Gbps (you won't get this in actual disk transfer speed as you lose a bit to overheads). The expansion card slot is around 3.5 GBps (so 28ish Gbps).

Xbox series X|S alternative high speed storage expansion

    Hi,

No, sorry it won't work. The USB ports on the Series X|S are USB 3.1 which have a maximum speed of 500MB/s. This means, no matter what drive you buy, no matter what speed it's rated at, you're stuck at the max speed of the USB port.

The only drives that can be used for Series X|S games are either the internal or the storage expansion card.

I have the Expansion card for my Series X. I also have an external 2TB USB SSD in an enclosure. I can only use the external SSD for Xbox One games. They do load a lot faster than a mechanical hard drive, but I can't play my Series X games off it.

Thinking of picking up an SSD for Xbox Series S

Bear in mind, even faster SSD external storage only works for Xbox One and Xbox One X enhanced games. They won't work with Series X|S games. You can store these games on these drives, but you can't play them.

NVME is a waste of money as the USB 3.1 ports maximum bandwidth is 5Gb/s (or 500MB/s).

If you want an SSD for your Xbox One or Xbox One X enhanced games, then your best choice is a SATA SSD connected either via a SATA to USB 3.1 adaptor or an USB 3.1 external drive enclosure.

Xbox Series X eternal hard drive

    Hi,

If your game is now a Series X optimised title, it can no longer be played off an external hard drive. It must be moved to either the internal storage or an optional expansion card.

External USB hard drives are too slow to play Series X optimised games. None Series X games will still run from your external drive. The internal storage in the Series X is a fast NVME SSD. These drives are several times faster than mechanical hard drives.
