The hard drive in the X1 is 5400rpm, so yes, a 5400rpm external hard drive will work fine.

 

What is the most affordable external hard drive for X1?

80.5% used with 150GB left on my X1 hard drive

I would like to know what is the best external hard drive at better deal. I'm thinking WD between 60-150 bucks, so it could be Elements, My Passport or My Book. Doesn't matter which one you think it's the best to afford. A question (weird one) is, can I be able to play some X1 games on the external as long as both of the console and external hard drive are on? I want to get a good one that has no issue or problem. If warrant needed, then let me know what you think. Thanks for reading!

I recommend the Seagate Expansion. That is what i am using. Also it was the one that Major Nelson tested and is using as well.

I've seen lots of articles comparing speeds of various devices. A pure SSD is hardly any quicker than the fastest mechanical drive.

So, I bought a USB 3.0 enclosure and went with a Seagate 1Tb 3.5" 7,200rpm SSHD drive.

You get the best of both worlds then. I can vouch for the performance improvement as well. Much quicker at loading / streaming next to the Xbox One's own built in drive.

I use the X1's drive purely for apps... and the external drive just for games.

Its a Fantom 2TB 7200rpm drive. I wanted a 2 TB and this was just about the only one I found that was 7200rpm. It does not draw power from the USB 3.0, so it will have to be plugged in which was fine with me. So far I've been extremely happy with this
drive and would highly recommend it.

 

i've used multiple Seagate drives .. they sent me their latest 4TB portable drive to review and it works really well.
