What if you bought the physical and digital of the same game?

Thank you for taking the time to post this on the Xbox Forums. We understand you are inquiring about the benefits of owning a title in both physical and digital format.

The only difference between this, would be that you would no longer require the disc in order to play this game.

The save data you use, can be transferred over and your achievements will remain unlocked. This would be the case for most titles [there are some titles out there that are only physical and do not carry your save data or achievements as it is considered
a completely separate game from the original base game. i.e. "The
Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete
Edition"]

Any DLC that you purchase, you will also be able to use it across both types of media.

You bought those games digitally? You need to be connected online in order for the system to authenticate that you really do own those games. It's the same on PS4 with their digital games. The solution would be to but physical copies of the game.

Because inserting the disc is the same thing. You are being checked if you have the right to play. If you have installed the game, If you don't physically have the disc, to prove you have the right to play, you are not allowed to play.

Originally, you would be able to buy a game whether physical, or digital, and you would still get the same benefits. Added benefit of trading in if you bought physically.

Now they are, once again, two completely separate libraries. You either buy physical, and get the benefits of physical, but are restricted to only physical. If you buy digital, you are restricted to what you can do digitally.

If anything I would see the 'transition' stage as one to try and stop at.
