What happens to captures when you connect an external drive?

Was thinking about using an HDD for captures, do the ones on the console get deleted, moved to the external or just nothing happens?

Also it's still not possible to copy them to a USB is it?

Pictures and videos captured on my console are regularly erased

There is only a finite space on the console internal drive to store captures.

To my understanding, if you make a lot of game clips and screenshots that space is quickly used up and any subsequent captures will overwrite the oldest file on the drive if its full. This space is a reserved area in the system area and not the entire drive space.

If you upload your captures to the Xbox Network and/or OneDrive you can safely delete the captures on the internal drive using Manage captures on xbox console.

The alternative is to connect a external drive, formatted to NTFS, and change your capture location to the external drive. Be aware that this option doesn't allow sharing on the Xbox Network.

Recording 4k game footage gets cut off now at random points (Xbox One X)

You mean setting the game capture location? I have it set to what I have always used, the external hard drive. Again like I said before, I never had any issues recording things. This happens with every game now. I've been recording several games lately,
RDR 2 online, Jurassic World Evolution, and a few others and it seems to happen no matter what. I'm using a WD easystore external hard drive as the game capture location. I even bought this new external because things weren't working.

    Xbox one X record feature

Try deleting some captures off of your consoles Internal drive after you upload them to the cloud.

You could also connect an external drive, formatted as the capture location for all your captures.

I think you only have limited space on the internal drive for captures, clips, screenshots etc. and once the limit is reached older captures are overwritten by newer ones.

    Clips and Pictures being deleted

Clips take up a lot more of your internal drive space than screenshots.

    Missing captures

You didn't mention if they are missing from the console internal drive or the Xbox network.
